1) I'm in early 1939, and every 2 minutes a new radio message is coming in describing the German successes in the army assault on Poland. It's nice that my crew members know what's going on, but when I'm sailing the sees it's annoying that traveling at 512x speed is permanently interrupted by 'income message' alerts.

Why don't you just use SH3 Commander to set the time compression for the event of getting a radio message ? Set the max TC there to 512x and while travelling at 512x you will not get interupted, right ? Did not try that for me yet though.
