your shells would patter off its armor like so much gentle rain.....

so the Admiral on that ship says to his Captain:
"that thing is ruining our paintjob, kindly remove it from my ocean, please, it's impudence disturbs me. I think I'll go have a nap now <yawn>"

Captain: "Aye sir, XO, one broadside for that little canoe if you would be so kind?"

XO: "aye aye sir! FIRE MAIN BATTERY!"

KERFOOOM

and it ends up with you being credited as the first commanding officer to reach earth orbit and also being posthumously made the head of the new German Space Program.

maybe they'll name a new medal after you?
Firing a main armament broadside at a 'canoe' would give new meaning to the phrase 'overkill'

I suspect that a full broadside from one of those things would be heavier than the canoe.

Yes, you may very well be right, I'll try to find out how much one of those 16' shell weighs but how the hell else will the explosion send him into orbit? that needs a lot of boom!

You know the sheer sound alone might ruin the admiral's nap

Even a broadside from Yamato (which had the heaviest) only weighed about 15 tons. The explosive power, on the other hand, probably wouldn't blow a type II into the air, but one shell might blow it in half.

And in either case, I don't think anyone on the Type II will be complaining much.

15 tons, that's still an awful lot of explosives but I agree, probably not enough to launch a submerged sub into the air if properly straddled by such a broadside there wouldn't be all that much left of it though so indeed no complainers.

I don't see any sense in firing at greater ranges than 1000 meters in GWX.First, you get yourself compromised.Second, you'll waste a damn lots of "HE" rounds to finish the ship.Third,it's a good chance somebody of the deck crew gets killed.

It's always better to do a stealth approach at periscope depth, and to perform a precise torpedo attack.

Bingo!

For these reasons you state above, the old debate about deck gun rate of fire is pointless!

What should happen if we have properly approximated the evolution of the U-boat war... is that it becomes inadviseable to use the deck gun... and demonstrates the reason why they were omitted from U-boats as the war progressed... but at the same time allow the player to retain the freedom to keep and use it... at his own risk.
