If you are afraid of missing, you might use two torpedoes, one aimed slightly to the bow, the other slightly to the stern. In other words, one at 1/3 ship length, the other at 2/3 ship length. So, if your aim is good you have an almost sure kill, if it is bad you still have good chances of hitting with one of the two torpedoes.
