Remember, that the earlier pattern-running torpedoes need to be launched directly abeam of a convoy...as Hakahura's image shows correctly.

Did you know that in real life the commanders were required to broadcast a warning to other u-boats when they were preparing to fire a pattern running torpedo (Fat) at a convoy?

It's no wonder that the escorts were able to locate so many u-boats with their high frequency direction finding equipment. "Too much radio traffic!"
