Default Does anyone care about this?

Thirty years!
The movie was certainly ground breaking in its day.

Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope - May 25, 1977

I care, though I had forgotten the exact date. I remember because I had already been married for three years, and had been looking forward to it for months. At the time it was unlike anything anyone had ever done before. I actually saw it before word-of-mouth got out, which means I didn't wait in two-hour three-block-long lines. For several days no one knew about it.

It's still a great movie.

Don't remind them, it will only mean another "special" edition will be released.

But has it really been that long

Sounds like you have a couple of years on me SS. I was sixteen at the time and didn't see the film until August of that year.

I was 8, and I saw it at a drive-in with my dad and my best friend. Probably in June or July.

Being interested in writing and graphics, I was following the progress of Star Wars (which it was universally referred to as at the time, none of that Episode blah, a new hope cobblers) quite some time before it was released. Of course at the time, I didn't know it was going to be that big, but I kind of figured it might be quite influential knowing the trouble they were going to with design and special effects.

If you weren't around at the time it was released, I guess it's kind of hard to understand the impact it had. It was the first time that a space battle sequence actually looked like it might genuinely be taking place, instead of a lot of crappy models on string. There had been a few movies with convincingly done space stuff before, notably 2001: A space Odyssey, Solaris and (the little known) Silent Running. But Star Wars was the one where it actually all came together with decent production values and a fun storyline.

Certainly one of THE influential movies of all time. But these days you kind of wish George Lucas would give it a rest and shut up. Expect another overpriced DVD boxed set soon.

Wow, I was 10 and it was great back then. I have all the versions for Eps 4-6. I did not care to much to Eps 1-3. To many graphics and not enough story. Doesn't work when the majority of the movie is CGI.

I remember the first time I saw it! The standing in line... We staued and saw it twice!

As I was only born in 1990, I didn't see this movie until I was about 7-8 years old. However, I remember that after seing it (although my english wasn't that good in my youth) I watched it again....and again....and again....

Then I got a shock: there waws TWO MORE MOVIES?!

Anyway, this movie has indeed changed the movies of this day, and it has also changed my life! (this is not an overstatement)

I was born in 1990 too, but I remember when they re-released it. My dad took me to see all three of them with him at the local cinema. I was in kindergarten, but I was absolutely enthralled with it. And to have it shown in a movie theater just made it all the more fantastic an experience.

Knock the re-releases all you want, but I think it's great that they occasionally show it in theaters again. I know that I'll be quite sad my children won't get a chance to see it and experience it like I did.

Of course, with all the advancements, by the time I have kids, who knows :p
