Report: John Edwards Charges $55,000 for Speech on Poverty

John Edwards has an example to teach University of California at Davis students how to avoid poverty — charge $55,000 for a speech.

That's how much the 2008 Democratic presidential candidate negotiated for his fee to speak to 1,787 people at the taxpayer-funded school in January 2006, according to financial disclosures.

According to Joe Martin, the public relations officer for UC Davis' Mondavi Center, the fee for a speech entitled, "Poverty, the Great Moral issue Facing America," was worth it to school officials.

Martin told The San Francisco Chronicle that the center paid Edwards because at the time "he wasn't a (presidential) candidate and from our point of view, he was a speaker of interest that people in the community were clearly interested in ... we feel it's our mission to present those speakers."

The speaking fee, which amounts to about $31 per audience member, was the highest Edwards earned in nine appearances last year at colleges and universities. In all, he earned $285,000 for the nine speeches.

Edwards spokesman Eric Schultz told FOX News that the speech at UC Davis, "was funded by sponsors and ticket sales," and the school has said ticket prices for the event ranged from $17.50 to $45.

Incidentally, students at all of California's public universities will pay a 7 percent increase in tuition next year.

I have a cellphone (we call them mobiles) and I agree with you 100% Subman1,which is why I use the off button when I'm driving or don't want to be contacted. I'd be lost without it now,it's just too useful.

If my cellphone rings while I'm driving, I usually pull over or do not answer it. But that's not 100% of the time.

My husband does the same except when I'm riding shotgun with him driving, then I answer all his calls.

There isn't a good handless car system for our Samsung models and pressing the earphone buttons correctly is more distracting and dangerous during driving than conversing.

Yep - i feel like the only person in the world without one and I kind of like the peace. Besides, when I did have the phone, I only made one personal call on it maybe once every two weeks to a month. Every other call was someone calling me for help on something. Blah! I'm the type of person that hates talking on the phone anyway. If you want to talk to me, get on IM and message me instead.

I have one very annoying friend that likes to call up and chat for up to an hour at a time. Another reason I don't want a damn phone! :p

I also like the fact that when I have my cell phone, I don't ever have to worry about being stranded, or in trouble. If I keep my wits about me, I can always call for help with it. It's scary to imagine something happening and me not having any way to call for help.

If anything happens, someone else 'always' has a phone you can use. I've been rear ended even (car totaled) and someone driving by will always call the cops for you even without even you having to ask. If this is a scary thing where someone is stalking you - buy a gun. Besides - a gun has cheaper monthy bills. If you don't shoot it, it costs you nothing.

Apart from that? It's just a money black hole. Toss some money in, and you can get some worthless collections of pixels, or an annoying ringtone, guaranteed to piss somebody, somewhere off wherever you go!

Also: I dont like memorizing phone numbers I am laaazy.

There is something to be said for being able to piss somebody off anytime and anywhere, so good luck with that one.

The off button still costs you at least $30 a month last time I checked!

I hear you though. It is like a security blanket to you now. Trust me though, I thought I'd miss the thing too, but the moment after I threw it into the lake, I have not missed it one iota!
