I liked it....a lot more detail than the movie, but I prefer to watch the movie....if you know what I mean

Loved it. It was darker, for one thing. Also, rather than the innocent Lt. Werner as narrator, Bucheim used his own experiences, which included early service on destroyers. While undergoing a rather severe depth-charging, he realizes what the British submarine guys went through when he was on the ship delivering the attack. Lots of fun.

Some other suggestions to help bankrupt you if the Kriegsmarine is your thing:

Donitz and the Wolfpacks - Bernard Edwards (ISBN 1-86019-927-5)
This has quite a lot of info on convoy and wolfpack dispositions and quite a bit about the intrigues behind some of the orders given by Donitz (or Doenitz if you prefer).

Type VII U-Boats - Robert C Stern (ISBN 1-86019-855-4)
This is probably one of the best books on any submarine type, and gives you quite a comprehensive rundown of all the equipment and various models of the most famous U-Boat type of them all.

U-Boat Crews 1914-45 Gordon Williamson (ISBN1-85532-545-4)
The last suggestion is from Osprey Publishing's Elite series, aimed mostly at modellers, but is still a nice thing even if you aren't into modelling, there are quite a few cool titles in Osprey's range, including one on German U-Boats from WW1, which is well worth a look considering how hard it is to find stuff on that subject in English, as well as several titles on US subs and surface ships in both WW1 and 2.

A view from "the other side" which I really enjoyed was "Torpedoes In the Gulf - Galveston and the U-Boats 1942-1943" by Melanie Wiggins. (Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/Torpedoes-Gulf...9373167&sr=8-2)

Of course, being a Texan, my view is a bit biased but I really enjoyed seeing how a community responded to the U-boat threat. There was also a fair bit about the operational history of the boats operating here just off the Gulf of Mexico. A nice quick read that gives you a real sense of what it was like living in the shadow of the Grey Wolves.

Iron coffins help me get into U-boats in a big way, my bookshelves can attest to this fact!

If you want to read about the U-boat war from the other side, and how it was to hunt them, the book Walker R.N. is a good start. You then get to see one of the best U-boat hunters in action and get the background to the mighty 2nd support group!

"Das Boot" and "Iron Coffins" are absolutely must have for SH3/GWX players.
These two books are probably the best books about Uboots ever written.

For another look at the 'other side', this one from a combat standpoint, I highly recommend U-Boat Killer, by Donald MacIntyre. He was one of the best, and the man who captured Otto Kretschmer. His book covers a wide range of experiences battling the 'u-boat menace'.
