Yup, Russia has changed a lot for sure. I did actually go there in 1979 when it was all still very secretive, and it was an enjoyable trip too, although we were shepherded about a bit and I suspect steered away from some stuff.

Incidentally, for those of you into the Russian stuff, I recommend the book 'Russian Submarines - Guardians of the Motherland' by Wayne Frey ISBN 0 - 7414 - 3447 - 4

Black and white pics only, and the repro could be a little better than it is on some of the pics, but if you want a lot of pictures of the 705, 971 and 941 subs (confusingly aka in NATO as the 'Alpha', 'Akula' and the 'Typhoon'), this book is worth a look.
