I have nearly an identical setup and can vouch for this.

AMD Athlon 64 3500+
2 GB RAM
200 GB HD

I went from 2 NVidia 6800 GT's running in SLI to a single NVidia 8800 GTS and the stepup in performance is outstanding. Before, I had to run the game with low to midrange settings, with eye candy like environmental effects turned off. Now I can run it pretty much maxxed out with 4x AA and it looks great... getting 40-60 FPS nowadays

Interesting. I didn't want to buy another "old" 6600, and could not afford anythign like the 8xxx, so I spent $99 on a 7600 GT.

This tells me that even a modest upgrade is better than doing SLI on an old card.

The 7600 gets 25ish with everthing on and 8x AA

I've got a factory overclocked 7950 GT and run at 1600 x 1200 with everything maxed and x4 AA. I get between 35 - 50 fps in external view and freecam but that drops real heavily (like by 20 fps,) when there is volumetric fog. The rest of my system is 3.8 p4, 2 gig ddr2ram and an audigy2zs. It is a massive improvement over my old 6800.

I upgraded from a Athlon 3000+ and 6600GT to a Athlon x2 4200+ and 7800GT and noticed a doubling in proformance in SH3.

The 8800GTX rocks BAD! Had it since before Xmas.

EVGA 8800GTX, EVGA NV680i Mobo, C2D E6600 OCed@3.4Mhz, 2GB OCZ DDR2 PC2-8500 SLI-Ready Edition Dual Channel, 800W Tagan PSU, 2xWD Raptor X 150GB
SB XtremeGamer Fatal1ty Pro...

Next on the buy list is a Samsung or Dell 30"

I'd like to see some of your 3DMark06 scores!

I'm at 11,101 at the moment. I also get around 70 FPS in SH4, with it rarely dropping. I have a GF 8800 GTS 640 MB, but I also have a Core 2 e6600 and overclock like a fiend.

6600s aren't really that impressive, so SLI'd wont help a ton. Always get the top card in whichever series you can afford. It's worth it. My 7800 doesn't break sweat with this, so I bet the 8800 really motors.

Or I could have said....

*tongue in cheek*
I'm lucky I have an enormous penis so I don't need to compensate by comparing 3d mark scores or gloating about my PC spec.

Jeez, wish I wouldn't have seen this thread

My system is:

AMD Athlon FX-60 oc'ed to 2.81
DFI LanParty mobo
2x 7900 GTX SLI
2gb Corsair PC4000

With all gfx sliders maxed, 1600x1200, all eye-candy on except volumetric fog, I was getting a nice, solid, playable 30fps on the bridge, in the free cam, in the control room, and 60fps on the map.

After reading this thread I decided to enable SLI for SH4 (was on single-gpu mode) just to see what would happen.

Enabling SLI dropped my fps to 12-15

OK, so I put SH4 back to single-gpu, rebooted the machine and I'm still getting 12-15 fps. Has gone from quite playable to unplayable unless I disable a lot of eye-candy.

Anybody got any thoughts on how to fix this? And nope, not a heat problem, my system is watercooled, CPU and both GPU's. Temps are well within limits.

DH
