I see it too. It could just be barrel distortion from a wide-angle lens on the camera.

That's what I'm thinking...regardless, that's just a photo I pulled off the web, not the actual one my grandfather has.

I'm not sure, my wikipedia skills are a little grey in this area - it's hard to tell if the reference is to the copying of the machinegun design itself or the magaine drum/box fitting.
