Default Message Log Bug can't be fixed by Modding!!!

I'm really dissapointed that the Message Log Bug is not listed for 1.2.

The Bug where your Mesage Log fills up and Locks your PC!

I'm even more dissappointed that I'm being told that there is a Mod that apparently fixes this issue.

Well I've looked at this Mod and it is NOT a Fix!!!!!

I don't want the game to reduce the contact report distance from my sub and hence lower the number of contacts to those that are nearer my sub, as this mod does, thus lower the overall number of contacts in the Message Log book.

This is a workaround not a FIX!!!!

I find this extremely "Gamey" that contact reports pop up suposedly from "other" assests and SubComPac and these contacts happen to be in the general vicinity of your sub every time!

Fist of all....how would these reporting assests even know exactly where you were to be able to report contacts that are only close to your present location...?

and...

Wouldn't this have been a dead givaway to the enemy "if listening" that a sub is in the area of all the contact reports...?

Anyway it makes the game feel more of it's only YOU in the whole Pacific and nobody else cause contact reports never go out for "other" assests that are operating far off, elsewhere, they just pop up in the vicinity of your sub and your sub alone.

So basically, even if I'm wrong about the above, "I prefer the games STOCK contact distances, thank you very much".

I just want the Message Log Bug addressed and I want my contact report distances left alone thank you.

Hopefully the Devs won't let the current Mod FIX this issue for me.

well, I sort of know how you feel. I don't like to have to mod a game just to get it to work right. I'm running 3 mods only right now that enhance the game, not patch a bug.

I lost a very good career patrol to the clipboard lockup Delivered supplies, sunk 3 ships on the return patrol, was nursing my fuel all the way back to Midway to refit and then head for Pearl, but got a Pacific news broadcast, went to see what it was... (the way the news makes the war out to be happening all around you, you get the immersion feeling that the Japanese are running amuck in the Pacific IMO. Bases falling left and right, if you didn't know how the actual history turned out, you'd think Pearl Harbor was the next to be captured) and the music started to loop, so I stepped away to let it all load, came back 5 minutes later hoping I wasn't sunk by patrol craft, but the game was still frozen, went to heat up some dinner, came back in 10 minutes and it was still looping the music and sounds

Went back to get dinner and returned and still nada. Locked up

Oh well. I doubt I could have made it back to Midway with fuel so low, so chalked it up as a learning experience to manage fuel better on the trip in

Happened to me twice now...

Lost two good patrols...

Guess I better save every 10 mins or so...from now on.

Well, he lacked in style...but he has a point about the ranges. I would also prefer having contacts reported at longer or very long ranges (to give you a general idea about traffic or for the occasional intercept if conditions are right) and scratch the close contact reports alltogether which could as well come from ubber-radar.

But I guess this is not possible as I think you can only adjust a max radius for contact reports, not a minimum one, right?

I agree with the general comment that the problem needs fixing by the devs, AFAIK there is still a chance it will be fixed in 1.2. The full fix list hasn't been published as yet.

If they don't fix it in 1.2 I'll use a workaround for the time being. I don't see the problem as being a critical one at this point but I probably would see it as critical if the final game patch doesn't fix it.

Default Quick Fix

Read this post quickly so Im not sure if someone else already posted a "quick fix"

but go to you SH4/data/cfg folder and find the "contacts" file. Open it with wordpad and you can edit the range that radio contacts are given to you.

I changed mine a bit so now i dont get as many contacts and the game runs smooth when you load your log and such.

Hope the devs fix this but as of now my game runs perfectly.

Hope this helps, happy hunting.

Hi Charlie...

it is easy to fix... just reduce all radio contacts, important and casual contacts down to 500 Km into Contacts.cfg file into Data\Cfg.

There is a fix from ParaB made, but he uses diferent settings.

Plus erase all non important Pac News.... let only the most important into the Messages.txt file into Data\Campaigns\Campaign.

Look at the settings, each new has a value, zero or 1, it is explained at top of the file.

Zero means the mesaje will be send only one time, and 1 means it will be repetitive.

make all then to zero, so they will be send only one time intead eavery 5 minutees up to you recive them.

Plus, if you consider some new is so important, you can let it with number 1, but change the frecuency.... intead 5 minutes, put 1440.

1440 is one day.... so it will be repited only one time a day.

Manage it at your pleasure.

It works fine .... no more hangups...

Nice logo

The 'fix' should, surely, be that messages are removed from the log after a reasonable time - allowing the log size to remain small enough not to affect the game as badly as it does in 'stock', without altering what you get by way of distance.

Having said that, this is a curious understanding of 'realism' - in reality your radio guy would bring you the messages addressed to your boat, and wouldn't copy a message that wasn't addressed to you. (Some listening in on messages of interest doubtless occurred) - he'd also only listen in on relevant frequencies - no radio op ever listened to every message on all nets, there'd be nets for sub ops and I'd be amazed to find they weren't further divided between commands - ie I'd be surprised to find Asiatic fleet boats listening out on the same radio freqs as the boats out of Pearl.

Cutting the range of contacts to retain only those relevant to you (by range) is therefore no more 'gamey' than any other work round... it's simpyl reducing the level of radio traffic to that which is relevant, which is what would have happened in reality. (Just in a different way).

This thread is funny

I don't know the in's and out's of what reports would be received by a sub but there are various ways to look at this that makes reducing the distance of reports received quite believable.. i.e;

SubComPac would know roughly where you are.. after all, they sent you on the patrol and it's quite reasonable to assume they wouldn't send you contact reports for convoys 2000km+ away from you

Or

You're getting all contacts reports but your radio operator/map plotter doesn't bother showing the details because they're too far away to be important to you

I do agree the problem should be fixed.. I don't think I saw anything about the stopwatch speed calc thing being fixed either but if we wait till they fix everything we'll have a long wait for the patch.. incremental patches are fine with me.

Of course additional fixes may be included in the patch that haven't been mentioned yet.

Ok, the mod does not work for you. No reason to blast the author of the mod and provide detailed explanation of why it is worthless. Now, it does not look like the developers touch the clipboard on the patch 1.2 coming out. So when you have the correct way to clear up this issue, please post it on the patch forum 1.3 you can create yourself. Sorry if the author did not explain it more clearly to you that it is work around and not a FIX!!!

The mod has cleared up the clipboard issue for me and it is all I have to make the game playable. Un-install the mod and wait for the board to pop up next time you click it. Infact, do not download any more mods so you can have a field day on the forums if you do not like them.

If you have detected that I'm a little pissed at your ungrateful post...then you have a grasp on how I feel when someone attacks our modding community for attempt to make the game better for you. Not to mention there are members from all over the world that some English words just do not translate into a simular meaning word. So 'workaround' just may not translate and FIX was put in its place.
