Actually I dont know if WWII subs had them or not. Would make sense though to protect capitol investments.
The WWI escorts were so that sub captains wouldent blunder into nets / mines. |

Kind of glad we dont have them since I cant go above 4x TC when near a ship. Yeah, sneak into Osaka harbor at 1 kt an hour at 4x TC because a merchant is beside you and see how fun that is.

In a book I read called "Pride runs Deep" (Not based on real boat) the Sub it was based around had escorts out of base... dunno if real boats did.

Real subs had escorts into and out of base so they wouldnt get mistaken for the enemy. Plus, in "nuetral " waters they had specific corridors to use where allied planes werent suppoused to attack a sub.

Just reading "Wake of the Wahoo" and it was met by an Australian boat (tug I think) which dropped off the harbor pilot onto the sub who then helped guide the boat into the port.

I know for sure they had them out of Freemantle and Brisbane. I think they had them out of Pearl and Midway too.
You get corvette or something take you out, he'd then give you a "God's Speed" or "Happy Hunting" message over the blinker signal and turn for home. Also when approaching for rendevous with escort on returns to port, there would be coded lightgun messages and coded responses for patroling ships and planes. If you see a plane diving in on you with a light blinking on it, you better be quick on the response and use the correct response or you'd get bombed before you had the chance to re-do it. |
