My family waited for and watched the Victory At Sea series in the 50's when it was first aired and then the re-runs as they occured. My Uncle Fred, a Bosun, served in the South Pacific aboard the Destroyer Tender "DIXIE" AD-14, and had a scar on his back with the shrapnel still inside. I was in in awe of his stories "Aboard Ship"

The music of Victory at Sea always brings me back to those growing up years. I would hear that music in my head whenever I stood lookout watch aboard Tusk SS426 during my own service. The sea would be breaking over the bow and rushing up to the sail and spashing up with the backlit sunlight illuminating every splash and drop while the flying fish escorted us into Bermuda and I would be happily listening to Victory at Sea in my mind as I scanned my sector with the 7 X 50's.
I have a collection of documentaries which I recommend to everyone to view, one can either buy them for their very own collection or check them out at their local library or through the library network if your local library doesn't have them.

2. The World At War - Excellent documentary with many interviews of participants and survivors of many countries in WW2.
3. U-Boat War
4. The Battle of the Atlantic
5. World War II - When Lion's Roared

And if you have the time watch the entire Herman Wouk "Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" saga mini-series. It takes a time commitment to get through the entire saga but gives you a fantastic overview of the years leading up to and through world war 2.

My first Victory At Sea music collection was on a Readers Digest LP collection which also includes many other patriotic marching songs and other recordings of interest. It was a 4 LP collection I think, I have it in my LP library back in New Mexico so I can't check the details right now.

Having the ability to listen to stateside radio and enjoy the music was a very important morale booster aboard ship. I enjoy the ability to put together music tracks and radio stations within the confines of SH4 and enjoy cruising at 1X (sometimes) while listening to the music and doing other chores around the house while my submarine tracks toward my assigned station. Of course, my family members look at me like I'm weird because I've got my computer on, playing big band music, or Abbot and Costello, while my Sub (external Camera view) sails along on the computer screen. They ask what I'm doing, and I tell them I'm commanding a submarine. They sarcastically comment, "Looks like a lot of fun" as I continue to do other chores while my sub tracks a course at 1X toward Truk Lagoon.
