Yea well don't want to get into a debate but that was answered, there is some level of complexity in SH4 damage that is not in SH3. Namely the concept of "temporary" repairs that allow you to get back home but not to dive...not hard to understand is it? Anyway, it is true the interface is different.

True, it was answered, but...

It is complicated... because where does it tell me if it is safe to dive or not? It doesn't. Therefore when I dive and my engines don't work and I sink like a stone how do I know what is going on, is it the boat is knackered, or is it bugs in the programming? How can you tell the difference? Which is what is most irritating about SH4, I'm sorry for my language but to cut a long story short, SH4 is crap and I don't like it. I was nuts to think I could play both U-Boats and American Subs.

Ummm no it's not...its got potential. Don't see what is so dramatic about playing 2 different sides but whatever...

To me its crap. I don't like the game as it stands now. I far prefer SH3 and everything about it, and from what I hear in the beginning it wasn't up to much either. Maybe SH4 has got potential, probably does, but I'd have rather waited a bit longer for it than got it now and been disapointed by it like I was.

Glad we got that sorted.

Well, move on lads, nothing else to be said. Thank god all the NYGM team or the GWX team didn't think that eh?
Otherwise, we'd all be playing PS3 or Xbox with supa cool subs that dive in 2 seconds, have überfast, unlimited reloads and damage control from the starship enterprise. Wouldn't that be fun?

Yeah it would be a barrel of laughs, we should all do that instead. I mean, wow, wasn't I selfish and nasty to expect SH4 to actually work properly on recipt?

WHen you've played SH3 as much as i have, they're's no going back.

Is SH4 buggy? Yup. Will it get better? Im 100% positive about it. The games been modded to where its more playable whilst we wait for the next patch. I didn't complain about the game, i just went about trying to fix it as best i could. As a game, Sh4 is in some respects superior to SH3. In other respects it fails because of its buggy state. To the casual user, SH4 would be REALLY hard to get into because of it.

As an aside on damage control; People are used to clicking "realistic repair times" or "realistic sub damage" and in SH3, it really didnt mean anything. The reality is, if your sub was hit by a shell, and the pressure hull punctured, you couldnt dive. Sh4's damage model reflects this reality. In SH3, you get a deduction from your hull integrity and your crush depth became shallower, in Sh4, if your bulkhead(pressure hull) has a large breach and if your submerged, your boat will flood faster then you can pump the water out. In SH3 (after mods), repairing your diesals took like maybe an hour or two, in SH4 it may take all day, which also is more realistic. (not to mention you can see your repair crew at work in the CR, tools in hand) Overall it took me awhile to get used to the idea, but in this respect the game is pretty deadly, and it keeps you on your toes. I certainly think twice before engaging in a gun battle with an armed target.

Heh!

I didn't, which is why I didn't buy it.

I think in a year or two it'll be a great game, but right now it's not for me.

Welcome back Penny

For what I've read so far none of the devs has stated that "temporary repairs" is a feature, for the moment it's just a guess from the players, hoping that's not another thing that isn't working as it should.
BTW, did you tried to repair the damn AA gun?, it either could be repaired or it couldn't, there's no temporary patches for that.

The damage model for SHIV is like a lot of other functions in SHIV - it has a lot of promise, but it has some current issues that make it almost unworkable. Repair prioritization, linked systems, etc. are all going to be very cool once a some of the kinks get worked out - for example, the kink Ms. P. is experiencing, where everything shows as OK but the boat is actually on the absolute edge of total destruction.

I didn't come back to SHIII/GWX because I hate SHIV. I came back because SHIV isn't ready yet. I think it will be a better game. Someday.

That's why I decided to hold off and not be taken in by the hype. And when I start to hear things are on the up for SH4 most likely next year then and only then will I purchase SH4 which will not cause me to swear at the bugs. And on a brighter note the upgrades I need will be cheaper as well.

For now I got GWX and that keeps me happy.

Still patroling the Atlantic thanks to GWX and plan to do so for a while.

I prepared to go to Pacific with 2 GB RAM and a new GeForce 7950 card, but based on the our great forum feedback, I think I'll wait until the next patch.

Besides, I'm still having fun being a U-Boat Captain even though I'm getting the crap beat out of me thanks to GWX. . . what, another radar contact? More planes and destroyers coming my way . . . DIVE!

@Penelope_Grey:
Probably a bug... Also look for a first screen yo posted and look to a far left side where names are, notice 2 guys with no pictures of them...
That ain't looking good...
As for a dive crash, go to a custom mission, try balao or other sub, try NOT TO USE TC over 32x and the first time you hear damage reports, go to external camera, check for hull breaches and if none, dive to PD...
If there's still a problem, [if patched 1.1] return to the atlantic until this bug is sorted out...

I'm happily ensconsed in my U-Boat once again, I'm very excited as my U-Boat of choice the IXC is soon available, and I am surviving my patrols! (for now)

It's 1945 for me and I am ripping the guts out of the Australian convoys in my big IXD2 beast.
