Seems it is definitly a ATi related BUG.
This should be top priority in the 1.2 patch!

Any ATI users getting the right sun glare?
It's quite possible that this bug is up to ATI, not the SH4 devs to fix.

Default No glare, no love

No glare for me, either, and I also have an ATI card. Drat and double drat!

Except that it doesn't happen in ANY other game, including Sh3 (sun glare works fine there for ATI users).

It's likely the method the devs use for generating sun glare they made generic across brands, and did not account for how different manufacturers may handle certain DirectX calls differently.

Is this bug reported to the 1.1 bug list?
Cant seem to find it in the list of confirmed bugs. Couldnt we confirm this Bug as it seems that no ATI users get the right sunglare?

Here's something interesting. I used the windows key to switch out of SH4, do some stuff, then went back in. When I went to the bridge, I had sun glare and a glorious bloom from the sunset but it disappeared after about 4-5 seconds and I was left with the blurry orb of a sun that I'm used to otherwise. So it appears bloom and the glare effects are supported but somehow switching off. That's my guess anyway. Here's a before/after picture comparison.

Immediately after switching back to SH4:

A few seconds later:

Before anyone claims it, no this is not due to the sun setting. I was able to replicate this three times in a row by going back to the navigation screen, switching out of SH4, switching back in, and going to the bridge. I was not able to do it just by switching out of and back into SH4 while on the bridge.

I'm really hoping this can help someone on here to debug this problem for I miss the glorious sunrises and sunsets of SH3.

Just to make the point, here's another before/after. I've tried playing with the various graphics options to see if they have any effect on the duration but they don't.

I can 100% confirm the strange and interesting observations by dreamer.
X800XL here, Catalyst 7.3:

after alt-tab:

Important: You have to go to the navigation section and back, otherwise it will not work....

I can confirm this. Strange indeed. Maybe ATI's driver simply don't recognize the game as a 3D application and thus don't render all screen effects?

Great observation! Seems there is still some hope to us ATI users to get our eyes blinded by the sun!

Have reported the Bug again in the 1.1 BUG thread.

Yeah, I saw your post to that effect over on Rage3d.

As an interesting test to this point - who here is running software that can monitor the GPU and video memory clock speeds? (I think even Rivatuner can do it for ATI cards...but not too much else)

I'd be interested in the graph showing the clock speeds you are seeing.

Is the card, perhaps, in 3d mode when the glare is 'working', and the moment the glare has gone away, the card dropped back down to 2d mode?

Well, I can confirm the effect. Look at sun in periscope, no glare, jump to nav map, alt-tab out, alt-tab back, back to periscope...yup, glare. For about a full 2 seconds, then it fades out to nothing again.

Weird.

Unfortunately, can't test the 2d/3d clock question, as the Cat 7.3s have borked my ability to overclock.
