How to finish a patrol / complete a mission ?

<My 1st patrol was star+binoculars to japan left PG 10th Dec 41, got to the star 17days later on the 27th Dec 41. Patrolling up and down the coast of Japan I sunk a total of 12 ships, 4 with torps, and 8 with Deck gun 4 of the 8 were 2tn fishing boats. The even after I ran out of torps and shells the icon didn't change colour until 11th Jan 42, that patrol mission once I reached the star was 14days. Sinking any amount of ships/tonnaged did not change it, it only changed after the 14 days were up.
