It's an American subsim; there weren't no war for the Americans at the time - nor the Japanese, at least at sea (though China was an ongoing issue of course). So, sure, you can probably change the date - but eh, what would you do? Cruise around the pacific soaking in the sunshine and waving to neutral Japanese merchants?
