Ok..that was just a teaser...many more to follow...give me about an hour..

The USS Drum is a WWII Gato class sub, now a museum at Mobile Alabama. It was one of the first Gatos to see action in WWII. It first patrolled in early 1942.

I visited Mobile this week and of course had to tour the sub..

Ive just come to the conclusion that one cannot fully appreciate the differences in technology, function, and layout of US vs german subs, until you start looking at inside pictures of each. Also sort of answers why there's no radioroom in SH4. The conning tower in a US sub, is quite a busy place

Yep! On the US Fleet Subs the conning tower had everything the Captain needed for the attack. You can see from the photos what is all there.

Attack Scope, Observation Scope, Navigator's Plot table, Helm, Radar, Sonar, TDC, even a small depth gauge, all crammed into that conning tower. And then add about 8 or 9 Crew man of tha fire control party and you have a very busy place! I felt crowded with just two of us up there!

Yes, I was very impressed with the interior of the Submarine. They have many "living history" displays and many of the gauges still sparkle! It still has its WWII appearance.

However, the exterior of the sub is in sad shape. Rust is eating away at the Hull.. In fact the stern is almost completely gone. On top of that the park was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina two years ago and many of their historic planes were demolished. They have been rebuilding, but I imagine that funding is an issue.

The Big draw is the USS Alabama Battleship next to the Sub. I'm guessing lots of money goes to keep her in tip top shape.

I never knew that the GATO class sub had "4" diesel engines..

That's nuts..

Only two screws though right guys?
