Don't forget to open your torpedo tube door (press the 'Q' key) before firing. Otherwise there is a several second delay before your torpedo leaves the tube, which can cause it to miss a little astern of where you are aiming.

You can always use the watch officer to just "check" your pre-firing solution (To see if you really are entering the correct range, AOB etc.), then update and fire the torpedo manually. That way you'll know if it's your basic firing solution or something else that is at fault.

I'm assuming you already know this, but you can just use the "Return to base" option, instead of waiting until you're close enough to get the "dock at" option. Only drawback is that you will not get the 100 renown bonus for physically sailing back to base.
