Default Quick question : anyone getting freezes with GWX 1.02?

I ask because my normally robust PC has frozen each and every time in my last 3 outings with 1.02. First time was after an hour traversing the North Sea, no contacts. Second time, not even on patrol, but in the main SH3 screen (the one with campaign, options etc.). Third time was after spending an hour catching and positioning for a convoy heading down from the Scottish coast, lots of contacts!

This never happened to me in GWX prior to 1.02 and it didn't happen all of yesterday when I was using Office applications (yeah I know not the same stresses on components).

If no-one else is seeing this I'll explore temperatures etc. in the PC.

Thanks guys.

Hi, this is a common occurrence even pre GWX; just about everybody on the Forum has encountered this. If it happens again, press the F12 button repeatedly. This should free up the page and the sound loop

Yes, it is a problem with SHIII vanilla. If you play it enough, it will happen

For the record I have had a lot of crashing problems with 1.02, I am going to reinstall GWX tonight and test without the 1.02 patch to compare and see what happens.

Would like to see your results scalelokt.

Yours are CTD's right? I don't seem to get that, just locks which I'm going to explore tonight and try the F12 trick if a lock occurs.

Good luck with yours!

Yep mine are CTD as well. I havent figured out if its 1.02 or its just a coincidence that it started around that time and there is actually a hardware problem. I will let you know what I find out. Thanks

Well I did some testing last night and early this morning and so far it does look like patch 1.2 is causing my problems. I'd say I'm about 90% sure at this point. Some trial and error has shown that I get no crashes when using GWX on XP or Vista. However after installing 1.2 I get crashes on both XP and Vista. There is definitly something about my computer that 1.2 doesnt like, because most of you seem to be having no problems. So this morning I played GWX without the 1.2 patch for hours with smooth sailing. I guess I'll stick with that until there is another patch or some kind of work around is found. Just wanted to let you all know, here's hoping you all dont experience these problems.

GWX Patch 1.02 was a fix patch - the changes were minor and should not cause CTDs when installed OVER A CLEAN COPY OF GWX (as many players will attest).

If you experience CTDs after installing GWX Patch 1.02, then there are two likely causes:

- you are attempting to load a pre-1.02 career which is simply not compatible with GWX 1.02

- your "base" GWX install was not "clean". Whilst the installer picks up numerous issues, it is impossible for it to pick them all up (just have a look at some of the posts on this forum - if the base GWX install could be stuffed up, it has been in what appears to be every way imaginable).

Thus, the QUICKEST and EASIEST way to move forward is to FULLY REINSTALL SH3 from scratch. That is, roll back SH3Cmdr (if in use), uninstall SH3, DELETE ALL REMAINING SH3 files and folders, and reinstall from scratch, patching to v1.4b before installing GWX and then GWX Patch 1.02.

If your CTDs suddenly disappear, then you know what, or more to the point, who, caused it. If they persist, then alternate causes can be pursued.

On this forum somewhere is a post by me, and there are similar posts by others, advising how to install GWX so that you have a "playing" copy, and a "clean" copy. For there will be more GWX patches (we are working on one now), so prevention is better than cure.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm by no means a computer expert, anytime there is a problem I have to resort strictly to trial and error to find the cause. It seems that with 1.2 I am crashing and with regular GWX I'm not, however if you feel certain that 1.2 isnt causing this then I'll take your word for it. When I reinstalled SH3 it was definitly a clean reinstall, I uninstalled SH3, deleted the folder on the hard drive, the save games, all the mods, everything. So I dont think that would be the cause. However I will keep trying different things and I'll definitly let you all know when I get it figured out just in case any of you have the same problems as me. Thanks again for the feedback, dont think I've ever seen a forum with so many friendly and helpful people!

Just to clarify my original post, my 'events' are not CTDs, they're screen lock-ups hence my use of the term freezes. I posted because I hadn't seen anyone talk about lock-ups, only CTDs.

FWIW I re-loaded up one of my saves which had previously frozen last night, headed towards a large convoy, torpedoed a a couple of ships, dove, evaded a V&W, came back, torpedoed, dove etc. without a freeze. So it doesn't happen all the time.

My problem might be something in what you say JScones - I followed the instructions for a working game not a clean re-install. If the problems persist I now know to try F12 as above or if that doesn't work do a clean re-install, so it's no big hassle.

PS Many thanks JScones for your continuing advice and help, not to mention for Commander, GWX etc.!

One other thing, do you get freezes when you are using time compression ?
Be very careful using TC1024 especially if you are approaching land, harbour or similar as your screen can lock up and sound will loop.

Can I just seek some clarification here, I'm currently in mid-patrol and therefore have not yet applied patch 1.02. When I get back to port I intend to install it. Will this break my current career? I thought we could install 1.02 whilst in port without any side effects.

Nemo as it is stated in the manual there is a probability that the 1.02 patch will render your current career unusable. That of course is just a probability. My career for example works fine in versions 1.00 and 1.02. My suggestion would be to try the patch and hope for the best.
