It's even possible to sink a merchant with a single shot (yes in GWX). Aim for the fuel bunk below the waterline, just underneath the bridge and couple of inches towards bow. Not easy but achievable. It splits the ship in two and the explosion is very nice & satisfying. Some call it the "G-spot".

Kpt Kosloff,
I've found a few G-spots in my time, but never harder then the ones on the Brits....

Yep, sank a merchant with a single shot before too. I think it was in the deck gun training mission. Fired a single shot from about 3k, and laughed when it hit, then fell off my chair as it blew sky high (the ship, not my chair. although it does happen from time to time ), and rapidly sank.

Couple of points -

First, you'll know you hit the waterline correctly when you see the plume of water AND you see the flash of the explosion. Explosion but no plume of water and you're too high, nothing but water (no explosion) and you're too low. Hitting anywhere else with GWX is a waste of shells.

Secondly, watch the barrel of the gun. It will "settle" and hold it's position momentarily at an even level with the horizontal indicator (I usually use the first level of magnification). In any kind of sea the barrel will be bouncing up and down - time your shot so you fire only when the barrel is even with that horizontal indicator. I used to fire any time the shell was ready and cursed Bernard for sending shells way over the top of the ship I was aiming at - but it's just the motion of the barrel from the sea.

Lastly, as mentioned earlier, keep hitting multiple spots.

I use the flak guns against trawlers. But I'll use the deck gun against the largest targets at night if the sea is calm enough to man it. Which is rare, or at least it feels that way - I'm always in a storm.
Hey everyone,
Wanted to give this quote a bump in case someone, like me, did not know about that barrel thing. Just found it out myself today after half a year playing. Searched on this forum and found this quote from ykaird, so I did not have to make a new thread.

Happy gunning.

i had a wierd deck gun experience with a large cargo the other day.

pulled right along side her at point blank range and fired a single shot into her side just forward of the bridge about half way between the waterline and the deck.

she immediately split in half. One deck gun shot - one kill. to my knowlege she was not damaged already.

i tried it with pretty much every other ship i ran across - couldnt duplicate it.

The Deck Gun Tutorial does my nuts in. I sink all of them. Get the compelted msg from BDU. Exit, and it has a "no assesment" thing on it. Done this 7-8 times and every time I exit, it appears as if Ive neevr done it. Same with Flak.

are you making sure you click "exam" before you start the mission - otherwise it is just considered training and you will get no credit for it
