Only today I was diving, trying to evade a destroyer. I realised I was in fairly shallow water and "pinged" to see how deep it was. The little submarine(the noise detector-goes red when you're in trouble)went red and the destroyer made a bee line for me.

I say that I was about 2k away from him and fortunatly I did manage to shrug him off.

Good job I did ping, there was only about 40m under me

Your 'noise detector' is not 100% accurate in determining whether or not you have been detected It is only a helpful indicator to tell you that your emitting a level of noise that may be detectable to others.

What I don´t get is how the h*ll merchants can detect me at 13-15 km.
I get that calm seas on a bright sunny day makes you more visable, but at 15 km!!
I mean...it´s hard for me to spot them.

Yes, but I think his point is that it turned red as soon as he echoed for depth. Plus he says the destroyer went straight for him, which means that echoing seems to have a clear relation with an increase probability of detection.

How late in the war are you? If you're being detected at 13-15 km so easily maybe they have radar?

Sounds easy enough, I'll just load up a mission and try it. But looking at the answers it looks like 'echoing' makes alot of noise.
