The U.S. Navy had a crane in Subic Bay way back when that was designed to lift the turrets out of an Iowa class battleship. Those turrets weighed 2000 tons; not quite the same class, but pretty impressive all the same.

Foreman to crane operator: "IF YOU DROP THAT THING YOU JUST BOUGHT IT"!!!
*Crane operator proceeds to swing sub over the foreman and ask for clarification of what he said*

Was that one stationary or on a barge like this one? The fact that this is floating and mobile is very impressive.......but then my experience with cranes is limited to landlocked varieties. Rick |

It was stationary; and I'm not knocking this one, it's amazing.

I would like to see the one you mentioned at Subic Bay. I'm about as far from water as you can get in this country. (Colorado)
I worked with cranes as an ironworker but the monster (I thought) land crawlers I saw were 300-450 ton at best. Not quite any comparison to what you see in a shipyard. I wonder what rent per hour she charges. ![]() Rick |
