A have an old IX campaign from GW1.1 that took me from Bergen, around the British isles via Scapa - Ireland and back to Brest when I reloaded it in GWX. That's november 1943. 150 km out of Bergen I was jumped by two fighters for the first time...

Your snorkel is your friend, the skies, day and night are somewhat more crowded... No more time compression than 128 max.

Unfortunately my flotilla is the 10th, my mission is to sail to Penang. Well, cool! However, I can't upgrade at any port for a IXD2.. Must be a savegame problem, no biggie though.

Its hellish.

I dont think GWX is too difficult in the early years, but something really scary happens in 43. I had done my patrols for years, a couple of close calls, but noting major, but then 1943 came around, and suddenly I lost my boat three times in a row, at pretty much the same spot, west of the Bay of Biscay.

Of course, something even worse happened after that, I reinstalled Windows without backing up my carreer folder in "My documents", so now I`m in 1940 with no Biscay Cross, no radar, and certainly no quad flak.

U-389, 1st (and last) patrol:September 1943: 31 air attacks within 11 nights. 31st attack sunk me.
U-972, 1st patrol: December 1943: 25 air atttacks within 9 nights. survived.
U-972, 2nd patrol: Februrary 1944: 9 air attacks within 7 nights. survived so far.

Yes, I stay submerged during daytime - no chance otherwise.
And no, I don't have a schnorchel...too expensive.

Radar detectors (NAXOS, METOX) are your best friends. Always dive if you have a warning and stay submerged for at least 30 minutes. Always!

I'm just on a trip to Norway to help with "Weserübung" (April 1940). Got myself a Fiji-class cruiser and a troop ship near Namsos. Had a little help from the Luftwaffe though how created a nice diversion for me . That's my 7th patrol.
