To get back the red, green and blue map contacts you will need to restore some of the files from your SH3 patched to 1.4b (pre-GWX) installation:

1. Copy all of the files from the ...\data\menu\gui\units folder in your 1.4b installation to your GWX installation. This will give you back the square, round and triangular colored icons for ships, subs and aircraft at all zoom levels on the F5 Nav map EXCEPT for the last few maximum zoomed in levels (where the ship appears as a little ship-shaped icon with a dotted line in front of it).

2. Copy the ContLine.tga and DashLine.tga files from the ...\data\menu\gui folder of your 1.4b installation as well. This will give you back the grey(for merchant) and red(for warships) sonar contact lines on the F5 Nav map.

NOTE: In both cases, these are only .tga files and will have no negative effects on how GWX runs.

3. While you're at it, if you want the orange directional marker showing where your U-boat is in the F12 external view, copy the UMark.tga from the ...\data\misc folder.

The above takes about 45 seconds as long as you still have the files around. To get the ship-shaped colored icons back takes a lot more work. You would have to go into the ...\data\sea\ folder for EVERY individual ship and change the individualshipsname_shp.tga file by A) For stock SH3 ships, replace it with the corresponding file from your 1.4b install OR B) For new ships introduced by GWX, you would have to either edit the file to remove the grey ship-shape OR theoretically, find a file from the 1.4b install that was of the same size as the one you wish to replace (IMPORTANT: Please note that I say theoretically, because unlike the three steps listed above, doing all that just to get the ship-shaped icons back was too much trouble for me, therefore I have NOT tried it and can NOT guarantee that it works). Frankly, by the time you're THAT close to the enemy, you've either seen them at the lower zoom levels and know what they are (or can zoom back out a level and check) or you can see the flag. So, I've never missed not having the ship-shaped colored icons around.
