German skippers in the XXI boats where trained to fire blind. The XXI has very sensitive hydrophones and can fire from 50m depth for this reason.
I've tried it and with help from the active sonar it is very possible. It would be simple with a homing torp! *edit* of course no XXI boats saw combat so we will never know how effective it would have been.

Yes, but no XXI saw real battle action, so we don´t now if it had worked anyway. By the way, Padfield (War beneath the sea) mentions one successful sonar attack done by a US skipper. He also says that this was most probably the ONLY SUCCESSFULL BLIND SONAR ATTACK in the war that is known.
