Back in the early '60s they put up TELSTAR, the first telephone relay satellite. It had no electronics; it was simply a big orbiting balloon that reflected signals from one station to another. At night it was bright enough to look like one of the planets, except it moved quite rapidly across the sky. It was cool to watch.
