I use the Type VII pretty much all the time, and while the DD's are tougher with the GWX mod I normally find that if I go on silent running at 2kts and dive below the 160m mark I can survive the worst they can throw at me. Bearing in mind my career is late 1941 at the moment, so I'm sure the DD's will become ruthless later on.

I also run on the surface after dark and remain submerged during daylight hours - especially when running near the UK coastline, the amount of patrolling DD's and corevettes make it very risky to remain surfaced nearer land.

The key is to spot the enemy before he spots you

As I suppose you don't take them on with your deck guns, it means you're wasting precious torpedoes with some miss probability when the same torpedoes could bring you big merchants on your log...

@ Makr :

" I do tend to run on the surface until something sees me. "

Confirm this is not a good idea, specially in places covered by airbases...

I disagree.

I run on the surface nearly all the time.

BUT.....................I only run at 64x - 128x time compression max!

This gives me enough time for my watch crew to see any nastys out there and time for me to crash dive.

I have several careers going on at this time with one being in middle 1943. I use the same method for all of them.

When I am in a area of known shipping (the grey areas on the map), I run 64x TC at the max. In other areas, I run 128x TC max.

Also the first thing I grab is the RWR when it first appears. It is a life saver. When I get the warning, I have enough time to dive to 40m at regular speed and not get attacked. Also not all radar warnings are from planes. Sometimes when I get a warning and dive, my sonar operator starts to sput out contacts from a convoy nearby.

The only way to handle the DDs is to meet them head on deck guns a blazin' and torps firing while you're at flank speed on the surface. Duke it out with them. Show them you're not afraid and are willing to stand up and fight the good fight.

Or.....

You could do like I do....slink away with your tail between your legs as soon as you even THINK you see one, go silent and go DEEP, make course changes so you stay in his baffles and pray.

Also, Makr... if you are only surviving about 2 patrols... it seems you forgot your lucky potato peeler!

Here is your potato peeler. Fritz is waiting for your help in the galley.

Welcome to Subsim.
