Gerald Ford dies at the age of 93
![]() Here's to a seemingly very ordinary man who took on a most extraordinary job- the Presidency of the United States, during a time of great difficulty for the nation and did a pretty good job, all things considered. I began a thread earlier about how I don't believe he deserved to have an aircraft carrier named after him and I still hold that opinion, but I hold Mr. Ford in the greatest respect for his public service both in and out of uniform. ~RIP |

Wasn't Gerald Ford the only president not to be elected to office?
He struck me as a nice guy. R.I.P Gerald Ford

Yes, only president that did not seek the officer by election nor seeked it at all. As far as not naming an aircraft carrier after him, why not? He had a naval career and was president of the US that ceased hostilities in Vietnam and brought credibility back to the US government.

The irony of his higher level political office career is that he was nominated in office after the resignation of Agnew for VP and then the obvious of Nixon's resignation for President. He also faced two assassination attempts by women.

Sure he was the president and he didn't do anything wrong other than hit a couple
of people in the head with a golf ball, but still I don't think the next US Navy aircraft carrier should be after Gerald Ford ... It's still up in the air and the final vote is up to the Secretary of the Navy. It's not just another carrier either ... It's a brand new class of carrier's and I would like to see America reclaim the name USS America for this new class ... They sank the old one not long ago you know ... Maybe we could like give him a couple of weeks of rest and then start a thread to vote on it and send our vote to the Secretary of the Navy

That was a most crazy reorg of the Office of the President.
One of the last real fiscal "conservatives" of our time, even if he did elect to print our way out of debt. He bitched about spending while he was in congress, and he continued doing it while President. And of course, everyone remembers him for pardoning Nixon. Don't agree with every call he made, but he did make some good ones in there. |

And so, we begin the week of the State Funeral. I always enjoy viewing these, the few that I have seen. They seem fitting tributes to men that have held the most powerful office in the land.

On a global scale. The people of East Timor will remember his warm character, gentle charm and statesmanlike handling. With the able assistance of his staff, Mr Kissinger, Mr Cheney and Mr Rumsfeld. His mark on the world will not die with him.

I'm not really sure that Cheney and Rumsfield had much to do with the Timor fiasco allowed by Ford and Kissenger.
All in all, Ford wasn't a Truman. ![]() |

I remember he was a bit of a klutz. The press really used to make a big thing of it. I'm suprised it wasn't humorously brought up.
