I don't use the channel even it is a short cut. I go north around England. I get a singleton ever now and then when going that way. The channel is just not worth the fuel savings. I find a milchcow if I need too.

Default Kaboom!!!

The Allies only have to patrol 20 miles of water at the narrowest point of the Channel; actually even less since some of it is mined. In RL, staying near the French coast would get you blown up.

Well, thanks for your responses and I'll take your advice. No channel excursions.

Still, I think it's kind of strange that my sub just explodes no matter what, no matter where. Is this written into the patch? Punishment for breaking orders?

I don't recall getting that message, but I'll take your word that it was given.

Odd that I could breeze into Scapa Flow and wreak havoc, never having seen a sub net nor encountered a mine . . . but there is a virtual Berlin wall crossing the English Channel.

Anyway, we're rerouting our trip. We'll take the long way round.

I ventured once into the channel and there are mines everywhere. I just stay away.

Also sounds like you saves the game to close to port with the Scapa Flow deal. If the ships were running aground it was probably from the effect of loading a save closer than 50km from a port.
