An overview of my current GWX campaign mission (also using LRT v1.3):
Well, we left St. Nazaire in early 1943 to patrol a grid northwest of Ireland. Were constantly harassed by aircraft and enemy destroyers the whole way to the patrol area. Were lucky enough to sink 4 enemy ships on the way. After a fruitless search in our patrol area, we decided to search an area closer to the Irish coast. We hit an inbound convoy, sinking an enemy pyro ammunition ship and a troop transport. Running low on torpedoes and fuel, we decided to head back to port. Off the southwest coast of Ireland, we were jumped by an enemy Catalina aircraft. With no time to dive, and unable to man the flak guns due to heavy seas, we ran up to flank and wildy zig zagged. It was no use. The Catalina's bombs found their mark. Our damage control team was topside, trying to repair the flak guns when the bombs hit. It was a sight of total disaster. Most of our damage control team on deck were blown to pieces by the bomb explosions. Blood and bodies were everywhere. Damage to our boat was quite heavy, but luckily we encountered no flooding. But some of our equipment was heavily damaged. 27 hours estimated repair time for forward batteries, 40 hours estimated repair time for aft batteries, and 60 hours estimated repair time for radar. Hopefully we won't encounter any more aircraft on our way back to port. We can only hope for the best. ![]() ![]() Last edited by nvdrifter; 12-19-06 at 09:22 AM. |

(playing a GWX campaign with LRT v1.3 installed)
First patrol update : We made it back to St. Nazaire after sustaining heavy crew casualties from a Catalina aircraft surface attack. Took a few weeks shore leave in St. Nazaire while our boot was being repaired. Attended the funerals of 9 crewmen that were lost during the aircraft attack. They won't soon be forgotten. Second patrol: We set out for our patrol grid located between Ireland and Iceland. While traveling to our patrol area, we came across a large inbound convoy. We dove to periscope depth and started our hunt. Before we could get into attack position, we were detected by one of the enemy destroyer escorts. Soon, an enemy Catalina patrol aircraft showed up, circling overhead. Then 2 other enemy escorts joined the attack. We dove silent and deep, but it was no use. We endured a brutal barrage of depth charge attacks over several hours. As our boot took more and more damage, it became clear that we could not shake our hunters. The damage to our boot became too much. Both diesels destroyed, heavy damage to all batteries... the list went on and on. When it became clear that we could not stop the heavy flooding, I (as captain) decided our only hope of survival was to blow ballast, surface, and abandon ship. Upon surfacing, we were attacked by heavy gunfire from the enemy escorts. Only a few of us could jump overboard before a destroyer rammed and sunk our boot. We were picked out of the dark, freezing water by one of the enemy destroyers, and now we are on our waty back to England for interrogation. As captain, I am responsible for the deaths of most of our crew. And I will have to live with that for the rest of my life. ![]() Some screenshots showing the heavy depth charge damage we took before blowing ballast: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Great job GWX team! HELLO Nvdrifter !
:-) I remember Your very promising "U-boat Repair Times" mod. This link in Your sig - this is new version* ? I see compatible with GWX - good :-) BTW - repair times in GWX are modified, or just like in stock, vanilla game ? Best Regards Koci * Just asking, I remeber first version of Your mod - too much hardcore IMHO :-) |

Looks to me like a few have not changed their tactics with GWX. Using GW I would lollygag on the surface and flip my nose at the planes. I would flip the bird at warships and drop my pants to show the moon to the armed merchants. NOT ANY MORE!!! First ride out I was going up and down like a whore house on dollar day. I had to change everything I used to do just to survive. I think it is darn realistic now

I just wish you could surrender your boat in those situations.....there is no shame in surrender, if you save the lives of 30+ men......

I must change my tactics as well. I started 2 campaigns in GWX a couple of days a go and died in both of them after 2 or 3 patrols

![]() ![]() ![]() GWX is most certainly surviveable... but you've got to think like a U-boat captain now. I strongly suggest getting a copy of The U-boat Commander's Handbook... 1943 Edition. Mine was about $6.00 U.S. on ebay. Words to live by. ![]() |

I also agree- GWX is survivable. Our problem is that while we were trying to sneak away running silent and deep, we were still being pinged by a destroyer. I am playing GWX with LRT installed. Before I could get away, we took a direct depth charge hit and it wrecked our batteries and electric motors. After that hit, we were in serious trouble (remember, much longer repair times). Later, we also took damage from several other close depth charges. But it was that first attack that handicapped us and eventually got us killed. Really enjoying GWX.

Couldn't agree more! Sometimes you should know that you may loose everything if you attack without considering the events that may occur after the attack.
