For me the NYGM is the best mod ever made. But that is my opinion, and also I would like to support and other mods, like upcoming GWX. But personaly I think that I would allways to use the NYGM, maybe because that mod is made exactly for my taste and have a big adventage then any other mods.

It all depends on your preference. In a nutshell -

GWX (due in a few days) - bigger feature list (e.g. more new units, more expanded campaigns), better graphics, balanced for a wider circle of users (from moderate to high difficulty)

NYGM - greater difficulty and several more advanced features (i.e. vicious AI enemies thanks to revised detection models; harder to get tonnage), catared to 'hardcore' players primarily

I soon plan a dual install; personally, for an atlantic campaign I may still lean to NYGM more - but I can't judge GWX since it's not out yet. Up to now I've been more of an NYGM user (though my install is always tweaked to my preference).

I´m amazed about this, as I compared my WaW I careers to my WaW II career with NYGM and I have to say, the tonnages where the same most of the time. Tho, it might be that I play SHIII with a daredevil attitude, so I get more tonnage but there´s always the risk of being killed.

I've played both of the BIG mods and I believe NYGM is the better of the two. NYGM ver 2.2 is more realistic in terms of game play. The enemy (allies) AI is smarter, unforgiving and doesn't allow you to make many mistakes. To play NYGM well requires you to be on your toes. The dare devil, overly aggressive captain gets killed in NYGM!

I'm in early 1944 (14th patrol...600k tonnage...100% realism) in a IXD-2 and have learned through mostly minor errors that you must take NYGM seriously. Attacking a convoy now, with as many as eleven escorts, is not for the faint of heart. There are circumstances when you can't attack in NYGM and if you force it you can get yourself killed.

Also you read a lot about eye-candy on this forum...as far as I'm concerned, NYGM has more than enough eye-candy and its totally immersive. Bottom line...its the game play that is superior!

Well the tonnages are still high even with NYGM, but mine are actually a bit lower. To me it also doesn't have to do only with ship damage since the escorts and planes in NYGM are downright nasty at times (in a good way, for me).

That said, I know there is a new ship damage model in GWX which I don't know anything about.

Also - key point - ship damage doesn't matter nearly as much as the way you play SHIII in getting tonnage.

Which mod....NYGM or GWX?

This is the $64,000 question. I really like what I have read about NYGM but I am going to try GWX first I think. It is nice to have a choice!

What numbers in terms of tonnages per patrol are you talking about?

It seems to vary a lot for people.

A successful mid-war patrol on a Type IX for me is usually still 30-40,000t, Type VII usually 30,000 or less. It's still a lot, but I think these numbers are far bigger for most people. NYGM does its part in this with generally having more torpedo hits per ship and more persistent destroyers. I noticed my Type VII tonnages climbing down with version 2.2 particularly as I mostly have to face convoys, approaching which seems to be somwhat more of a gamble with that mod.

Hello and welcome to SubSim

Both GW and NYGM are really good mods. I went for GW because it was closer to the type of game I like playing, but my suggestion would be to try them both and make up your mind for yourself. In a nutshell GW is more graphically demanding and NYGM is aiming to be closer to reality. To tell you the truth both have almost the same level of difficulty for me (NYGM is probably slightly more difficult but there are no real differences in that department)

GWX is a totally different story though. It is the next level of the SH3 evolution and in my opinion it would be unfair to compare it with either GW and NYGM. It is comming out in a few days and it's a MUST

Could be interesting a less hardware demanding version of GW and be able to mantain all gameplay features like sensors, campaign files and other upgrades. :hmm:

So far in my experience with the Beta Version of GWX I haven't seen any issue to indicate that it is more hardware demanding than SH/GW/NYGM. There might be a slight lag of a second or two in the loading screens but that's all really. I have 512MB RAM and GWX runs fine.
