Default IXB, IXC, IXC40 and IXD2...

The second career I played I wanted to try out the type IX boats. Since I knew by the time I saved up 9000 rewnown for the IXB, the IXC would be available soon enough I waited to get the IXC figuring it was a slightly better boat. Here's the thing- Recently the IXC40 has been available, at 7500 renown. The annoying thing about getting a new sub, even a derivative of the hull you already have, is that you have to re-buy all the upgrades. Later in the game, this gets pricey; in fact a lot of times it simply seems better to upgrade an older boat than to buy a modern one.

Right now the only difference I see with the different type IX varieties is fuel capacity. The D2 looks tempting because it has something like double the range of my IXC, plus it has more external stores. Anybody have some good suggestions? It would definitely be cool to roam the south atlantic/caribbean in '45 in a D2, continuing to wreck havoc up to the very end of the war

I'm with you dude. The new boats purchased should come with all the bells and whistles. I just keep upgrading my original boat.

I'm a pretty novice player as far as sims go, but the one 'realism' aspect that I WOULD definitely be behind is having BdU simply assign boats/hardware. While it is nice feeling that I'm 'rewarded' for my performance in a better boat, often times it forces me to use a boat I didn't want for extended periods (in the case of my 2nd career, tooling around in a stock VIIB for two freaking years).

Neat trick but I would prefer to start with what was available. Just me

I brought the IXB but after two patrols the IXC was available so took command of an IXC only because it can travel further (IXB 8400km approx, IXC 11000km) other than that i dont think theirs much difference in the two? Im off on my first patrol to america to grid CA73 right outside the US harbour, im expecting to be attacked alot by aircraft as this grid is way too close for comfort. But as soon as the IXD2 is available i will get her.

Another reason I'm curious about the D2 is because I want to make sure the boat I'm in gets the best electronics- For example, in my other career, I have a VIIC but only have the first sonar set and the FUMO30 (2nd) radar; however in the help screen it appears there is a second sonar set you can get and 2-3 more radar sets; I'm guessing better versions of the type VII can get better upgrades.

When starting a career with SH3Cmdr, it will only allow you to choose a U-boat that the selected Flotilla had up to that point in time (either as per SH3 availability or as per historical availability). It will not allow you to select whatever boat you want. So you WOULD be starting with what was available...
