Its possible that this game has certain code errors that cause it to act funny in all kinds of random ways based on subtle system based characteristics, ones that aren't always realted to Mobo or CPU or particular hardware. Basically though whenever I've had issues with SH3 that cause this much grief I've reinstalled it.

You know maybe theres a corrupt file or two in the installer that buggers the install sometimes.

I don't know enough about computer coding to know if my conjecture is anywhere near realistic but certainly this isn't a simple issue.

I'd suggest a clean reinstall.
I've done clean reinstalls and sooner or later this problem pops up again, sometimes it takes a while but it's always shown up.

So that's where that cursed copy of Silent Hunter III went:hmm:.
ROTFLMAO! Figures I'd be the "winner" that got it. Thanks for the laugh, it helps.

Nope it never got fixed. And that was about 10 Nvidia driver realeases ago... (I was using the 71.xx detontator drivers back then...up in the 91.xx now)

That is also after at least 3 reinstalls, the last of which I did Fresh and did NOT bring over my SHIII game folder from the previous install.

I'm running a GeForce FX 5200, hoping to be able to upgrade for Christmas.

I read somewhere that the right way to save a game is:

on surface click esc, click save, enter name (U-83) and save.
click save and exit, enter another name (U-83b) and save.

when you want to load the game again use the first save you did (U-83) in my case.

After I started doing this I've never had any problems with save games.

Hope this helps

I have always used the same format: When it asks for a name I use the last name of my captain, i.e. "Asche". When it says I already have a save by that name and do I want to overwrite it, I do. Never had a single problem.

I always name my save game AtSea and keep overwriting it. Biggest bug I've found is the SH3 Commander news blurb before loading the mission is often truncated.

Yeah I get that too, also the Long / Lat and course in the heading are zero after saving.

I usually save like this:

01
02
03(convoy)
04(sink01)
05(base)

and so on...
I never had problems.

I have had this happen once to me. It was after adding the battery fix mod while at sea. Once I loaded my saved game, I immediately started sinking and no matter how much speed or emergency blow of ballast, I quickly sank and died, no matter how many times I shut down and restarted my game. I ended up having to do a clean install and quickly learned not to apply any mods while at sea. No that I am saying that this what happen to cause your problem, but just wanted to let you know it has happen to me and I know how angry one becomes when you have spent all time trying to find something to blow up only to have start allllll over again.

I've gotten this before, but only when I use the "Save and Exit" option, which is known to be buggy. If I am under water, I usually "Save" then emergency surface and hit Esc and abandon my career. Try this. I've never had a problem when I do that. I'm actually surprised no one has mentioned this, yet.

Samwolf... As you can see in that thread I linked..I have had nothing but grpahics issues since I went to this Nvidia 6800 GT.

I actually loaded SHIII on my sons PC and sat with my old ATI 9800Pro and my Nvidia 6800, both with 4xAA and 8xAS, on the same Dell 2001FP 21" LCD monitor, and the ATI beat the crap out of my Nvida (and the ATI is 2 generations older than the Nvidia). Waves looked spectacular, reflections looked like reflections.... and being able to use light bloom makes a big difference.

The only game I have where the NVIDIA looked better was Half-life 2...belive it or not.

Im building a new PC now with a ATI 1950XTX ....and will be hard pressed to ever go Nvidia again.

Thanks, I know I've seen others say they had this problem. I never apply mods mid-patrol, learned the hard way early on when using mods. Still trying to figure this one out, but so far no luck.
