Well, sometimes it crashes to desktop and other times it just reboots itself. Im not concerned with the rebooting bc my video card requires a 300w ps and I only have a 250w. The computer has been known to restart every now and then while playing newer games such as morrowind oblivion but its not nearly as common as it is when I try to play SHIII with the GW mod. I can play oblivion for hours and not get a reboot. In the few weeks that I played vanilla SHIII it may have restarted on me once, but it def was not an issue. Now with the mod installed I get crashes to the desktop before I can even get out of harbor. It doesnt seem to reboot any more than it did but as far as overall stability.... I redownloaded the mod from another FTP and im going to try a reinstall and see if thats stable and if it is ill try the redownloaded mod on top of it.

May well be your PSU as you think
I had a similar problem where my comp would reboot itself so I doubled the size of my power supply Not done it since then Its one thing easily overlooked - people upgrade the video card but forget the extra strain on the power supply I did ![]() |

RAM!!!
That is your only problem. SH3 is a memory hog. It will take 1GB RAW RAM to run a supermoded SH3. 512Mb and you're out of the picture. It was enough for vanilla, but not for modded! |

"Recommended specs" on the SH3 box cover should read "Mandatory Specs" STOCK SH3 only runs so-so using recommended specs.
I've described this more in detail on the "GWX News" thread. It would be informative if you reviewed it. In short though... even without GW or GWX... 1gig of RAM should be a required spec to run SH3 stock. |

Nah ... this sounds like psu trouble. Rebooting is not a RAM disease. CTD, on the other hand ...
I would seriously try to upgrade all parts, if I were you. You dont have to shell out alot of money to get this game (and many others) running just fine.

I have noticed slight slowdown with GW 1.1a but that is because I have the seafloor installed and needed to clean up windows. Before my windows install went south I actually had a good period after I installed GW where I got decent FPS around ports and convoys. Before I play SH3 with GW I usually restart the computer and then turn anything and everything off. I also used a very good tweak guide to making XP run as fast as possible. So it can be done with 512 RAM but it takes conscious knowledge of your system. If the reports of GWX being no slower than GW1.1a are true then I shouldn't have a problem. |

I havent had a hard reboot since the new ram either. Im wondering if im so close to maxing out my PSU that if the computer has to spin the HDD feverishly for the page file that it occasionally cant keep up. Just a theory. BTW before I started SHIII I was already using 250-300mb of my 512mb. Id say I was having some serious memory issues.

I think I have it figured out. I have manually increased the size of the page file to 1024mb. For whatever reason it is set to manual and not auto. I didnt want to change the way it was handled so I just adjusted the size of the file from 7XXMB to 1024. No more CTD. Still need more ram as I am having some very minor performance troubles. The random rebooting (has not happened since I increased the page file) is, I am sure, caused by the PSU. As we speak I am looking at St Nazarine through my binoculars so I think im ok (knocks on wood). I am impressed so far. The only thing I have noticed is that the light houses still shine through everything. I thought that was fixed in the supermod. Am I wrong? Thanks for all the help. Seems I had 2 problems and everyone was right.
P.S. Anyone know where to get a 512mb stick of PC2100 non ECC? |

Sounds like PSU to me, either that or overclocking software.

Ive been playing non stop since my last post a fwe hours ago. Seems as though things are back to normal. Better than normal you could say, now that the mod is working. I finally noticed that I was getting memory messages in the background that I couldnt see because of the game. Increased the size of the page file and it took care of it. Still need more ram though.

Upgraded RAM problem resolved. Im loving the challenge, even now in 1939. I spent days upon days trying to get this to work. I even had to buy another 512 stick of ram. Was is worth it? .....totally

Good deal, glad you are now on your boat and enjoying the mod. Now, hook up with some of us on the weekend and play some MP missions with us. Is a lot of fun...
