Default Do I need to go through the english channel?

My career in late 1939 asks me to patroll BF19 which is on the othe side of the english channel. Should i try to sneak through or go all the way around england? do i have enough fuel to go around?

I would direct you to this thread about the perils of the English Channel: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=98906

As for the fuel question, it depends on the type of boat you're using, and the speed at which you travel (i.e. slower speeds = longer range). If you keep it at ahead slow or 1/3, you should be fine.

You should have enough fuel, if you don't run your engines too fast. Remember that you can have your Navigator estimate how far you can go at your current speed. Plot a course around England, check the distance, and ask for the "Max. Range at Current Speed"-report.

You can go through the Channels, but it's a death run, especially with a super-mod. Don't attempt it after 1939 or early 1940, as it'll be full of mine-fields and warships.

That pretty much sums it up espically the "after 1940" part.

Yea its a LOOOOONG way around but war is hell. Its alot better than blundering into a mine.

You should be okay on fuel as long as you keep it down to ahead 1/3. Submerging occasionally will help extend the range a bit as well.

I know that its up for debate but in my experience its true.

Mookiemookie mentioned type of boat. He's right; if you're in a type II you shouldn't be going out into the Atlantic at all. Go sink some ships around the Firth of Forth and call it good.

Two things if you go around:

1. You have more chances to catch the lone merchant and sink it.
2. You do not have to worry about sneaking around warships.

For extended fuel have you chief machinist dumb that bottle of whiskey he is hiding in his bunk into the fuel tanks. It thins out the fuel and you get more RPM on each diesel.

I remember going thrugh the chanel for the first time- severe storm and somewhere in the middle a DD started chasing me around- back than I was a bit of a newbie and instead going deep and silent I blew to the surface while he was around 500m behind me- while cannon shells were flying accros the bow I fired a stern fish somewhat in the blind and dive as fast as I could. Couple of seconds later boooom- I actualy hit approaching DD with a stern shot in a storm :rotfl: ( it was one of the greatest moments in the game).
To this day I have only nailed 3 more DD's- 2 were peacefully escorting a convoy (not a rocket science to get a nice solution+ when they went down convoy was alone for the taking) and 1 which was ancored in a port:hmm:

Meh dont get me started.

Last night in my latest patrol sonar picked up a warship medium speed closing.

Allright ... finally something ! We worked out the intercept and moved in. We closed within 1,200 yards and raised the scope... DD C Class ! and were on a perfect course.

After having learned that the DD's detect steam powered torpedos we selected electrics set shallow impact pistols. Everything is looking good ! Open torpedo doors. Line up the shot and LOOSE #1, repeat for #2 LOOSE !

Well even as I hit the fire button for #2 I see that the DD had detected the launch and had altered course towards me. Good thing we used electrics

To make a long story short both torpedoes missed and we had to spend several hours evading
