SHIII is notoriously dark. hope your new monitor helps, because no, it isn't normal that you shouldn't see anything at all... well... I mean, with the way the game is done it's normal in the sense that it's a common experience for many players, but it wasn't supposed to be like that.

I've just developed a problem with black skys. It doesnt seem to matter if it's day or night, the sky is pitch black. Just the sun, moon and stars glowing, along with a little fog.

Anybody else had this?

Yes, the black skys commonly occur when conflicting mods are fighting for control of the sky (in a manner of speaking). Best bet is to reinstall SH3 clean from scratch, then patch and then blah blah blah.

This will occur if you do not roll back SH3 Cmdr before installing either the NYGM TW or the GW mod.

Best to now do a roll back and then re-install the mod/s in question.

I had the same problem with my old analog monitor. At night I couldnt even see my crew on deck. While this may be realistic, it sux from a gameplay point of view. This is not a problem inherent to any of the supermods. Its an individual monitor problem. I got a new 20in LCD and I can see great now The big issue is that the game has no way to adjust gamma settings. You either need to adjust your brightness settings on the monitor or adhust the gamma/brightness through your video card.

It sux cause if you have a dark monitor then you need to lighten up everything to play SH3 but that makes it to light for everything else. So you always gotta be screwing with you settings.

I tried the light/dark sky mods but with my old monitor it still didnt remedy the problem. But, like I said, my old monitor was analog and about 6 years old. They tend to darken with age.

So does anyone know of a brighter night sky mod that can run safely with GW?

Thanks for the feedback. I swapped to a different monitor and it's fine. Still haven't got the new one (next week) but I expect it will be fine. The monitor I'm now using allows me to see easily, but it does tend to make everything a bit "grey".

Cheers

That probably means that you cranked up the brightness but not the contrast... Did you crank up the contrast all the way up (or very near all the way)?

Depending on which agp card you have, you might want to look at the ATI 'Omega' driver suit. As part of their 'game profiles' facility you can create individual pre-set screen settings, gamma, brightness + contrast etc. And set the appropriate profiles to load these when a game is played, returning to the original settings when you exit the game. This can be done for any number of game profiles and their required screen setings. www.omegadrivers.net
