Scapa Flow question, need help...(sos)

Im on my 6th patrol and Im on the dates where the Illustrious and an Auxiliary cruiser should be in port. My question is, is there really a side entrance of a gap between scullted ships on the east side? Because I dont see it on the map, it looks all connected by land. But I remember reading on here before that there was a side entrance which was better than going straight up the gut!

Anyone know?

What I used to do was come around from the top (on the other side), go to external camera and scout around scapa (dirty little cheater). If there was anything worthwhile, I'd come in from the west.

Watch out for shallow waters, however! I came in, sunk the Revenge and three destroyers, and got killed FIVE TIMES by the bloody rocks(or maybe they're u-boat nets?) smashing into my boat while going flank speed on the surface.

You killed three destroyers? Normally, there seems to be about 5, and I think I've seen 7. Even if you hadn't been killed by whatever, I'd still think if you were on the surface you'd still be detected by the remaining destroyers and thoroughly pwned.

EDIT: and on the eastern approach - I remember when I tried to sneak into Scapa w/the stock game and being rather annoyed that the east approach wasn't available. I'd read Churchill's The Gathering Storm, and remembered seeing a map of where it was. Churchill went on at length about the barriers he put down. I was under the impression he was pissed off about the Royal Oak episode.

Btw - has the wreckage of the U-47 ever been located? I guess I'll look that up on uboat.net.

Yeah, I snuck into Scapa in my IIA hunting the Illustrius. I found her, set up a good approach, and let fly with a 3 torp salvo from about 500m away. Then amazingly, an anchored aircraft carrier somehow managed to go from being anchored to 21 knots in 7 seconds, ruining my solution and only letting 1 torp hit. Isn't this a bit unrealistic? Wouldn't it take a few hours fr them to build up enough steam to move?

Cheers,

Dan Biddle

Is coming in from the west a better approach then?

Im scared, because if I don't play DID I feel guilty about reloading a saved game. And I don't want to lose my crew cause we had a great 5 patrols, and have lots of medals, and I believe Scapa to be a death trap. Ive ended losts of careers there

However, an aircraft carrier and an Aux Cruiser are just too tempting. Ill go on this hunt soon perhaps tonight and will see if I can figure out screenshots. Allthough I don't know how good they will be because I have external view disabeled:hmm:
