Help with the first mission

I'm trying to start the first mission as well but I can't seem to get as far as you. Shortly after starting I get the messege that the mission can no longer be completed. I'm running slow and trying to find contacts but I immediately get detected and launched on by a russian sub with a very fast torp. How am I getting detected so early or is this written into the scenario? Any help would be appreciated.
