Very cool! It looks like every one of these 10 U-Boats and 1 Italian boat was sunk by airplanes, Catalinas and Mariners mostly. It's amazing that every one of these losses occurred in 1943, and that 7 of them took place in July. Still, that is a small consolation for the 18 Brasilian ships and 56 Non-Brasilian ships sunk in the vicinity of Brasil's coast. A ratio of 7 to 1 and even higher than that from a tonnage standpoint. Another 18 Brasilian ships were sunk in other areas, further away in areas like the Caribbean and US coast.

My dad, pictured above, served on a USN Destroyer from mid-42 to mid-44, patrolling the Brasilian coast from Belem in the North down to Pelotas and Porto Alegre in the South. Their mission was to police the major shipping ports, looking for contraband and German spies, so they never faced off with a submarine during this time. EmeAzul

Schani, this is something I don't know at present, but am taking steps to find out. My Dad passsed away a few years ago and supposedly he left behind some letters that he sent to his mother during the war years. If these do in fact still exist, I'm hoping that the name of the ship will be in there someplace. By the way, his attachment to Brasil during the war led him and my mother to become a Baptist Missionaries there for 35 years. They were stationed in Rio Grande do Sul, the Southern-most state, for 25 years and then Rio de Janeiro for their last 10 years. Cheers EmeAzul

RJCJunior, sorry to have hijacked your thread with all this personal stuff. I was very excited to get your material on shipping losses around Brasil. Yes, I know how to speak and write in Portuguese. I was born in Rio and lived in Rio Grande do Sul until I was 17. Went to the US for University and Graduate school, then returned to Sao Paulo to work for another two years. Then in 1976 came back to the US and have been here ever since. I won't translate all of this into Portuguese, but I will say that eu tenho um BMW "M" que e' azul e por isso uso a senha de EmeAzul.
