Default Silent Hunter 3 GWX KC - Random CTD Issues (No Error Message)

Hi everyone,

I’ve been experiencing random crashes to desktop (CTD) while playing Silent Hunter 3 GWX (KC). The game closes abruptly without any error message or obvious reason. Here are my system specs:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 9700X

GPU: AMD RX 7900 XTX

RAM: 64GB

OS: Windows 11 Pro

Monitor: UWQHD (ultrawide) – Could this be related?

I checked the installation guide and confirmed I’m not using the in-game crew management feature (which is a known issue).

Things I’ve tried/noticed:

Running compatibility modes Win 7 and Win 8

Questions:

Could it come from the Graphics Card because i did not install the Nvidia fix?

Any GWX-specific fixes or mod conflicts?

Has anyone encountered this with a similar setup? I’d love to finally play without crashes! Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi hasenpfnote sorry to hear your having CTD issues my system amd ryzen 3800x Asrock Taichi rx 6800 tx Windows 11 Pro all works fine for me when you had your first Ctd did you delete your career save folder from your documents and then empty recycle bin if you dont do the above you will have repeated Ctds
I have also purchased a new 32" Rog Strix XG32UQ gaming monitor I think your monitor is fine ill touch base with other members of the team and see if they can give you further advice
Also if you have other active installs of SH3 with the SH3 Career save folder that could be the reason for Ctds GWX KC has multish3 so you can pic other save folder names like KC1 KCC

Hope this helps you some hasenpfnote

Hi Blackswan40,

I’ll now delete the savegame files directory and the Steam SH3 instance, then try again. I’ll keep you updated on how it goes.

Thanks again for the quick help!

@Aktungbby – Appreciate it! Played long ago but happy to be back.

Hi hasenpfote

If by Nvidia fix you mean the .nip file, it has no use other than for Nvidia card users mate. That is definately not the problem.

Like Blackswan, I suggest you delete your game save file in my docs, then empty your recycle bin.

Regards.

Hello, i am having similar Issues.
The game is very unstable and crashes randomly during campaign. did not have those issues when replaying the tutorials.

My setup:
  1. Install Steam Version on drive E:/
  2. Install latest GWX
  3. apply 4gbPatch
  4. Deactivated Fullscreen Optimizations, changed DPI Settings and running as Admin. Game would crash on Campaign load otherwise
System Specs:

  • Ryzen 9 9900X3D
  • 64Gb Ram
  • RTX 4080
  • Windows 11 Pro for Workstations
I read sth about a Nvidia-Fix
Would this help?
Thanks in advance for your Help

Crashing during the campaign is a symptom of 4gb memory problems, I'd guess you did not install the 4Gb patch correctly. it's a bit fiddly.
HOWEVER this thread is about the latest Knight's Cross edition of GWX, which is much more stable and all round better. This is supplied as a zip package which you unzip to a folder somewhere outside Program Files, set compatibility mode for sh3.exe in the new folder to Windows 7 and run it. No need for administrator mode if you are outside Program Files. As long as your system can support 1920x1080 resolution (as an option in display properties, it does not need to be selected) it should go. Knights Cross includes the HSie/Stiebler patch which does the 4Gb stuff.

You only need a legal copy of SH3 for copyright reasons. Hell, it's only a few quid.
