There was a deactivated mine on the sea front used to collect for the RNLI and there were constant sonic booms from the air combat range over the Wash. I was always afraid the booms were the mine going off.

The game is still available today. And still hideously expensive.

/\ that shines! When not driving my Freightliner in '76,'77 & '78 of the previous century throughout the lower 48 and Canada, I sat out blizzards and inclement weather in arcade-equipped truckstops half a century ago??!!; and became particularly fond of this gem: the 1976 Midway Sea Wolf 0n sale: $4,995.00 I put a lot of quarters into this gizmo and became exceedingly proficient W/0 any TDC. One quote from a U-boat biography I read: A kaleun to his subordinate: "TDC what TDC! Just aim the damn boat!"... is how I play most of the SH games to this day; ie: Get within 1000 yards; zero the 'scope, lead the target, and let fly the 'eel'...and I seldom miss!!? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea_Wolf_(video_game)

Default My 2 cents

I bought mine from BEST BUY in 2007. It came in a book sized box as discribed above. 1 StarForce DVD, and without the v1.4 patch.

My first sub sims were Silent Steel (not really a sim) and Sub Command. I got hooked on WWII sub sims with Silent Hunter II and Destroyer Command in 2002. I used to set up a home LAN so I could play head to head with a friend (dial-up internet wasn't so great in those days).

I bought SH3 on the day it released in March 2005 for $39.99 and have played it ever since. I tried SH4 (including the Uboot missions), SH5, and Uboat, but I keep coming back to SH3 for the best immersion. I can hardly believe that's been twenty years! So yes, I have earned the title "old man".

@klh - cool, it would be nice to have SH3 map on the wall. Sadly my SH3 edition has just translated manual.

What I really miss about buying games in the before time (the long, long ago) is the "extras" they used to come with. Sometimes it was a physical map of the game world. Sometimes it was a cool poster. A lot of games even came with a keyboard overlay, which instantly transformed your keyboard into a custom game controller. Those were the days!

MUTHERF-- lol
Well, you succeeded!
I first bought it on DVD in 2005, for about £25 (or $30) roughly. kind of on a whim, I loved the idea of WW2 related combat sims but i was usually horrible at them.

More often than not because it was mostly flight sims and I would always crash, I figured I cant crash a submarine, I got home, installed, fired up the naval accademy and promptly beached my Uboat.

yeah, physical map of the game world which you can put on the wall was nice bonus. Nice detailed game manuals etc.

Today we have collectors editions with nice statues, but they often get sold out very fast.

Its pretty funny observing difference in gamer generations over the last couple of decades, to sterotype:
The younger kids nomalised in to digital downloads, bankrupting them selves or mom and dad by paying for their game in many parts, with season passes, endless DLCs, scammy in game currencies and dodgy loot boxes, gotta pay $5 for that 'sigma hat' for my character etc.
Then at the other end of the scale you 200 year old gamer grand dad resisting all that. Demanding a proper box, physical media, a full printed manual like its 1991- hell sometimes he practically just wants the whole game printed out on paper goddamn it - and the text better be bigger than the side effects list on his colesterol pills!

Default Remember When!

Bought SH3 for $39.99 (on sale) in 2005! Already had SH1 and SH2! Just another move up!!? Have enjoyed ever since! Bless all you fellow old-timers and youngsters that were involved from the early days, and modded the game into what it is today! Well worth it.

I still have the original big box version. Along with big box versions of all the old sims. Including flight sims etc.

Yes mate similar for me too it was way back in 1992 I had an Amiga but the PC was becoming a gaming machine.
I poped into the virgin music store in Leeds and went downstairs to the games section there was a Microspose game called Taskforce 1942 the story of the Guadal Canal Campaign landing suplies on the island and stopping the other side doing the same intense naval battles with upto sixteen ships per side battleships heavy cruisers light cruisers destroyer this was the game that made me buy a PC happy days indeed.
