Icon9 Patrol I did only got 170 renown 😭

Basically, I decided to brave the channel. Less than a quarter of the way through, I find a cargo ship. Somehow, I lose 90% of my deck guns ammo, and finally manage to sink it. Halfway across, I have to engage 4 patrol ships back to back with nothing but my flak. Finally, I get to my objective. After i patrol for 24 hours, I decide to dock at a Spanish port for fun. When I do, I finish the patrol only to find I was at 17 hull integrity, and I had only gained 170 renown. Did I have to pay for the deck gun ammunition with
My own salary???

- How can you use 90% of deck gun ammo to sink one ship??? What was her tonnage? Large ships can take many deckgun hits, so it is better to try to sink them with torpedoe(s) first and use flooding and deck gun for finishing them.

- You need to aim below the waterline to sink the ship with flooding = just make enough holes below waterline and flooding will do the rest.
Aiming above waterline is kind of waste of ammo (= no flooding)

bad idea, patrol boats are small targets and they will always damage you when you try to sink them on surface. Hard to hit with deckgun and they take many hits from flak to sink them.

Even ASW trawlers are better targets if you can surprise them from behind and destroy their weapons first. Then they are easy target for deckgun.

- 17 hull integrity - yeah, that happens when you try surface duel with patrol ships -> bad idea, damage is not worth it

- only gained 170 renown - what % realism do you have set?
This can happen with low realism settings (= low renown). Plus small patrol ships have very small renown reward (torpedo boat has just 20 renown for me - and that is value for 100% realism), so it is not worth to fight them. Just dive and they will move away after some time.

The realism settings also affect the renown value. Here is a formula to calculate renown value regarding to realism:
Code:
    renown value = base ship renown value * ( (0.75 * realism %) + 0.25 )

im gonna explain this a bit better cos it was my first game with 100% realism so i kinda messed up alot

anywho. i was lazy and for some reason made my crew attack the cargo ship, and sped it up. i would have thought they would have sunk it rather quick. i was VERY wrong.

also, another thing. i have GWX (probably gonna move over to the wolves mod, i heard its better) and commander, and for some reason when i tried to exit patrol i could only abandon career? but when i did that, i could still play the game, so i assume it was a glitch or something.

aha, I fire manually from deckgun (and from flak at ships) and I had no problems to sink them
(except large ships)
I let crew just fire at aircraft, which is funny because ASW aircaft are more dangerous than unarmed ships.

I think this happened to me only when enemies were nearby and/or attacking me. There were some conditions when it happened for sure.

...the key is to use one eel as per 'Silent Otto' Kretchmer's top-ace mantra: "1 ship, 1 eel" only to cripple or sink a merchant vessel(s) with forward tubes holding, off at 2000 meters while reloading tubes. If attacking a convoy, await the departure of escorts with unharmed convoy vessels and manually yersel finishing off any crips (saves ammo) with the deck gun...from directly abaft their stern at 1500 meters as some (Liberty ships) may have still-active deckguns. Never deal with any aircraft (always too hazardous) or patrol boats...not worth the ammo-cost reichsmarks wasted. Remember yer Von Clausewitz OnWar: "in war(incl. U-boats) everything is simple; but sometimes the simple thing is difficult"...usually by Kaleun stupidity vs an increasingly air/technologically superior enemy. And if in a newer boat with a deep-water flushing toilet...only the crew-specialist does the flushing or you'll never make back to port! https://thelesserstories.com/blogs/t...its-own-toilet

This happens because of 100% realism setting. Back the setting off to just under 100% and you should be able to select return to port.

+1

yeah, I prefer to torpedo the ship and let the flooding to do its job + finish it with deckgun if needed. Or sink them with deckgun and flak.
