Default How well has DW done?

How well has DW done as a commercial release? Has it been sucessful? I know a "game" as complex as this doesn't always fare too well due to the fact that you actually have to work to learn it... But I do see DW all over the place in pretty much every store. Did it hit its targets?

I'm just curious because it probably will be important when it comes to whether or not SCS does a followup game or add-on.

I'm not sure how well overall. But when I was looking at games at bestbuy.com the other day, DW was the only game that listed as "Sold Out". The local best buy near me also carried 4 DW's in the last month, and theyre all gone.

I hope those trends I've seen are indicators of good sales overall.

Modern naval simulations are so few and far between, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a tendancy for them to get snatched up fairly quickly by enthusiasts. It seemed like there used to be more of them out there, though. I remember Red Storm Rising and 688 Attack Sub came out at about the same time.

I dunno... it seems like there's always Harpoon, though. The game that just won't go away. :-)

Seems like there's a nice slow, but steady stream of new players to the forums. Hopefully its a sign of steady sales.

I agree.
Going retail in america and europe (albeit in this case with 1 year almost after the american retail release) was the good thing to do.
Good web reviews + publicity the old fashioned way + retail = good sales.
So when is the opfor pack coming ? :rotfl:

My ultimate add on wish would be:

Sturgeon class snn attack sub(playable)
Yankee class
Victor class(playable))
Trafalgar class(playable)
November class (playable)
Alfa class
Whisky class

Having these classics to play with, I could reenact my favorite cold war scenarios. OPFOR sounds cool, but this would be even better. Any thoughts on this.

If you want cold war scenarios galore, then sub command with the various mods is your answer.
I don't think DW will have an official cold war opfor.
Dw is post cold war, and we need opfor units to balance the game.
And this means opfor surface ships, opfor air units.
Having just more submarines is a long shot backwards instead of going forward.

I was thinking how Akella http://www.akella.com/ru/games/scs/ is doing with their sales in Russia! Somehow I didnt see DW between other Akella products that come to Lithuanian stores

The Cold War is always going to be interesting for submarine warfare, but personally I think for a post-Cold War environment the next ones would be more useful:

Dhows (unarmed and armed with small arms and RPGs)
HSV
LCS (when it comes out)
Stuff to spice up NEO ops (angry protestors)
Shore based ballistic missiles with TELs
Ohio Class SSGN
Virginia Class SSN
Land based targets that could be civilian or military (trucks)
Land based military formations (tanks, artillery, infantry concentrations)
More variety of surface to air missiles and shore based anti-ship cruise missiles
Ability to deliver SOF and Marines by helos
More current Carrier Air Wing loadout option for the CVNs (No F-14s, for example)
Chinese Type 093
Chinese Klub-capable KILOs
San Antonio Class LPD
MV-22s and CH-53s included in the aircraft loadouts of US L-ships
Greater varieties of UAV

That's all for now. I have a whole list of things I wish I could see.

That CD case cover gets me chucklin' every time I see it... The AA gunner, the Captain with his binoculars.... it just screams WWII:

Anyone who didn't know anything about the game at first, buys it on a whim, and then boots up DW for the first time after having seen that cover will surely be confused about their purchase.

(or perhaps they'll be pleasantly surprised... )

P.S. I can't give sales figures or even hint at them... I've already got "slapped on the wrist" for saying too much to the BETA dudes... sorry guys.
