Wilhelm is right on or you could also do it at 128 if you don't mind a slower trip, but you should also check the efficiency of your watch crew. If the green bar isn't full then get someone Watch qualified (a little gold star), to get it up as high as you can. Helps if you wacht offizer is also watch qualified.
![]() Get someone Flak qualified as well and you might be able to shoot a few down before they bomb you. As a shortcut to 1 speed, hit the 'C' key to crash dive immediately you hear them then hit "F2" to get to the control room or 'F7' to get some damage control going. Don't mess about trying to have a look for them, unless you are going to stay on the surface and fight. (Hope I'm not telling you how to suck eggs on this but I know what it was like when I first got hit by an A/C attack without warning. sounds like you are playing late in the war when the air attack is your biggest threat you could try for earlier in the war about 41 or early 42 to get some experience dealing with planes before going later in the war because it gets nastier the later you go). Like life it's all about compromise. You can either go faster and get attacked without warning or you can play closer to real time and still have the game move at a reasonable pace.
In mid Atlantic 1024 is fine until about Nov 43 when the "air gap" gets closed over. There is also the bugbear of escort carriers which will bring out air attacks as well. The closer to enemy land you get the more likely it is you'll get buzzed and the slower you'll end up having to play because the more air attacks are going to come your way. This is fairly historical with the Bay of Biscay becoming a hunting ground for the RAF Coastal Command and the orders from BdU in late 1942 to stay submereged until well clear of the continental shelf. Either that or only play 1939 so you don't get so many air attacks. |

Going with faster TC also makes the computer ai move the convoys as blocks from point a to f to k etc. instead of going from a-b-c-d-e-f-g-h-i-j-k so if you are travelling with high TC you might miss the convoys possible encountered with slower TC same thing with ACs with slower TC you will encounter more realitic amount of ACs compared to high TC. You can test that trying to cross Biscay say 1943 or even 1944 the write down all AC attacks first do it with 1042 or 2048 then try again with 128 or even 64...you will ost definetly find a different kind of crossing for you and your crew

My small time compression strategy:
When in "friendly" waters and out of reach of enemy planes use max compression time for quick cruise. In enemy territory waters 256 at nite and 128 during the day. When in patrol area and crossing English Channel 64. Than at 64 I suggest to tge 2 cups of coffe and one cup of patience and a good book ![]()
