The type VII could carry 14 'eels' and the Type IX could carry 12 internally with 10 more externally....however early on those external (steam only eels because torpedo batteries need constant servicing) were reduced to only a few as damage from depth charging and the hazards of reloading at sea(2-3 hours-long unable to dive!!??)
