NYGM is the most realistic of mods. The escorts are ruthless, keeping your boat at depth while motors are stopped was impossible, and that was what makes it awesome.

Play NYGM with 100% realism is perfect.

You can get all this same experience with the Onealex mod, escorts are tough as hell and aircraft is deadly just as in Fifi's hardcore mod. Maybe a touch less deadly with the merchant weapons or depth charge explosions then Fifi's but very similar difficulty wise with the exception that Fifi's UI is tailored for manual targeting players only with the hardcore UI. You can't go wrong with either really, Onealex has a few more effects then Fifi's NYGM. Regular NYGM without Fifi's hardcore mod though is a let down compared to Onealex, so if you do go with NYGM make sure that you add on Fifi's hardcore rework mod along with it.

I'll rate all newest regularly updated mega mods for you here as I played them all but realize this is just my own personal opinion, others might differ in their views:

LSH3 2022 version - very easy difficulty wise, focused primarily on graphics rather then realism/gameplay. Lots of ships in ports but not much in terms of variety of ships compared to Onealex or Fifi hardcore mod. Good stability, difficulty level 3
Toyotagt86's mod compilation - based on GWX 3.0 normal difficulty, but has realism features built in. Similar to Onealex in terms of graphics/realism but lot less ships and missing a few graphical enhancements. Good stability and very easy installation, difficulty level 5
Onealex mod compilation - based on GWX 3.0 like Toyotagt but harder difficulty wise, most ship variety of any mega mod. Full of realism features to make historic gameplay and has the most graphical effects. Very good stability and very easy installation, difficulty level 8
NYGM Fifi's hardcore steel coffin rework - Toughest megamod of the lot difficulty wise, tailored for manual targeting players (UI mod). Full of realism features to make historic gameplay, also has lot of ships but less graphical effects then Onealex. Excellent stability and easy installation, difficulty level 10

Is the onealex mod different to the onealex mod compilation?

If so where do I get the latter?
