For your next models, might I suggest you that you keep UV-mapping and texturing as last tasks, when you have finished with the 3d modelling?
Hopefully this will help you organizing your UV/texture map more rationally, and ultimately it will save you some precious time

I agree with this. I don't even think of texturing until my model is nearly complete. When you renovate an existing ship by changing the hull shape, superstructure, etc. the textures usually end up badly distorted compared to the original. This causes problems like life rings that are too wide, windows that are a ridiculous size, etc etc.
Often the best thing to do is remap the UV so that it is more adapted to the new hull form.
