Some of my friends who normally have no interest in simulation games play Silent Hunter 3. I think there are several reasons why this game has such a wide appeal:

1. Stunning graphics which runs well on modest systems

2. Crew animations, you have a crew with names and faces which adds to the immersion, the different stations in 3D make you feel you actually are aboard a WW2 U-boat.

3. Unlike flightsims a subsim is less built on reflexes and assigning a gazillion buttons on your keyboard. To attack a convoy and survive you have to plan one step ahead.

4. Excellent mods

I noticed in my local future shop that SH3 is now $20 (unlike the deplorable $70 I paid at release) so maybe the low price and wicked cool looking concept has created a second wind for the game?

TIE Fighter... Best Star Wars game ever. From way back when the Star Wars games were good. Buy X-Wing Alliance and download the TIE Fighter mission pack for it (search the forums of www.xwaupgrade.com). All the missions of TF with XWA UP's graphics=Joy.

Yes, the friendiness here is pretty unique.

Well even though i already had SH2 i was and still am a die hard flight simmer, but when SH3 hit the shops i was dying to get it only to find i had to get some pretty radical upgrades done to my computer( windows xp, DVD player, and a much better graphics card) now this isn't a sob story but on a civil servants wage it took alot of begging the little woman to let me upgrade to the best performance required. As for subsim i did a search and found some wonderful people to help me in times of trouble, and as for MODS i never heard of any of them untill i came here. Hats off and many thanks SUBSIM.

I think all newcomers are impressed by this - I know I have commented on it several times. You just get used to the idea that the internet is a cesspool of idiots.

It still is, of course, they just dont know this adress yet.

:hmm: I had totally forgotten that UbiSoft even ran a SH3 forum. I was always so flabbergasted by the fanatically lunatic mindset of the IL2 crowd over there that I have never bothered to check out their SH3 forum.

A good one mate! :rotfl:

Anyway, i remember my first days with the old Amiga 500+. Gee i feel old now!
Compared to the Workstation I own now, my old Amiga gets his modest ass kicked!
But thats how i started with subsims!

But at the very beginning there was "Das Boot"

And Subsim was the first forum i joined! Didn't even bother with UBI!
Everything was cool here! The fellow Kaleuns and the mods!

You guys are the best!

Well here I am. A noob to Sh3 with my first post. Hello to all.

The reason I got the game was I saw it the budget review section in PCGamer last month. Liked what I saw and after a bit of research on the tinternet decide to fork out my £10. Not a genre I've really tried before but a tenner's not really that much to gamble.

Now I am addicted! I live in Hull, a port in the north of England. Every time I see a ship on the river I start estimating its speed and AOB.

So after reading the pitiful manual and still being more or less clueless as to how to play a quick google search lead me here. I've been spending dinner hours for the last week scanning through the forums and have now been able to up the realism to a massive 29% .

Most gaming forums have helpful people on them but this forum is one of the most mature I have used. The EVE online community is quite like this one whereas Oblivion forum is probably the most hostile place on the net.

There is nothing worse than been stuck with something and only to be shot down in flames for asking a simple question in a forum by some 15 year old windbag who probably was stuck the same as you were six months ago. Not seen any evidence of that here.

Looking at all I still have left to learn with this game I can forsee me asking some pretty stupid questions in the near future.

Well actually when I first got the game and saw the graphics It was a big "WOW" for me.

I just saw the game in teh shop and thort wot the hell .... it looks better than Super Mario 3 - and I cant get into those poncey strategy games -- I like First Person Shooters like RTCW and Enemy territory.

So I spent me munneh on it

when i needed teh patchy I found this site and forumz - and I said "OMG look at all teh people and OMG LOOK AT ALL THE DAZZLING DOWNLOADZ ". I downloaded until my wiring burnt out

Then I needed some help0rs and everyone here is so knowledgable, helpful and dont treat n00bz like some alien lifeform scum.

thx all

I'm new to the forum, but have been playing SHIII since about a month after it came out here in Oz. I visited here a few times after finding out about the forum and finally thought WTH, they seem pretty well behaved compared to other forums I've been on and i thought I might be able to help someone who was just starting out in the gam, not to mention getting access to some tips and pointers myself.

...well...what ever the reason for coming aboard, everyone is always welcome to mess on the gun deck.

Momma always said you'd catch more flys with sugar than with vinegar.

Welcome & cheers,
