This should not come as a surpise.
It's far more surprising that the Japanese waited that long, and it's to their credit that they have tried for such a long time to reason with China. |

The US needs to take immediate action in response to the unprecedented increase in Japanese defense spending!!!! We can not stand by and allow this to happen!!!
I hope we have preemptively sent sales people over to secure the new defense contracts.

Japan is the best counter to China to support. With Taiwan and South Korea having been at times under Chinese rule they are more susceptible to propaganda. It will be a long conflict of hearts and minds in the region.

In 2008 one morning when I was in China, air raid sirens started wailing and nobody could tell me what was going on. As it turned out, it was the anniversary of Japan invading so officially it's something that will never be forgotten, or forgiven. It will get attention.

With the changes in the Japanese constitution and doubling their budget we may see a couple of carriers on the horizon.
Perhaps this is the way South Korea should go as well with their stalled CVX

A "couple of carriers"...?
I dont think so. Way roo personnel and ressoruce-intensive, consideirng they must be protected by escorts, manned with crews and pilots. And China is obsessed with neutralising carriers' efficiency. Japan is a high tech country. It loves robots. And thats what I expect to see: plenty of robotized platforms, in the air, on the sea, under the sea. Also long range missiles and cruise missiles, drones. Submarines. Also, amphibious land forces to defend the islands of theirs. Also, Japan opened its labour market more and more in recent 20 years. It had to, since it lacked he needed employees its economy demanded - and this although every fourth pensioneer of theirs still works until age 80, due to age poverty. This tells me they will find it hard to fill all slots in the increased military they plan for. Comparable problems in Taiwan, btw., which also had to increasingly allow foreign employees into the country to maintain its eocnomic boom

Something akin to what the Italians have could fit into their fleet quite well and with their technology you could see the crewing requirement less than what the French or Americans have something along the lines of the "lean manning" of UK carriers

For consumption in the North Korean news market, I'd release the story, that Japan has completed Mecha-Godzilla.
....and since I work for a Japanese tech company, I can neither confirm or deny it's existence....or not? ![]()
